Title: two requests about upload priorities [no powershare ;)]
Post by: PrinzEnrique on August 20, 2006, 09:20:47 PM
there is something that bugs me on aMule. i share many files that are spread just once or even not at all in the network and i'd like to give those files higher priority than popular files.

so my first request would be to make the credit system deactivatable like on eMule
(don't bite me if it's already there somewhere. i checked the configs on the GUI and couldn't find it)

and the second request would be to change the auto priority.
right now it seems like the priority in auto mode primarily depends on the number of requests and only slightly on the known complete sources (even no word of complete sources on the wiki (http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Priority)). but shouldn't the sourcebase in the network primarily determine the upload priority of files. even if you don't want to make big changes to the auto mode simply raising the maximum priority in auto mode to "very high" for files with no or only 1 known source should be enough, IMO.

thanks for reading and considering my suggestions :)

no thoughts/opinions about my requests? not even "no"? ?(

I don't think there is any way to disable the credit system without making actual changes to the code. If you just want to disable it to push rare files better, though, it would be probably better to just up the priority of rare files further (like your second request suggests).

I thought the auto priority was actually based on the number of known (complete) sources, but apparently the wiki says otherwise. Not quite sure what the reasoning behind this is. Maybe the number of requests is a more reliable measure than the number of complete sources, because the info necessary for determining the latter is not reported by all clients. Another possibility is that this is for historic reasons, i.e. auto-prio was implemented far before the determination of complete sources  was. But this is just uninformed speculation.

I can see how including "very high" as a possible auto-priority for files with no other complete sources could make sense, but this should probably be an optional setting or the auto "very high" prio should be somewhat inferior to the manually set one.

the problem is even when you set files to very high prio if you're downloading big widely spread files you'll end up just uploading these or you'd have to set files to release manually to ensure that rare files get spread. but i don't want to set nearly all of my files to release.

i checked the prios of my files and i can clearly see that known sources is not the primary attribute for the prio but i didnt check the code how it's calculated exactly.

very high is not the maximum /"instant upload" priority so i dont see why auto priority shouldnt use very high. but yeah as an optional feature would be sufficient ;)
