Title: What's the min. config for aMule?
Post by: Joki on March 02, 2004, 10:20:17 PM
Would a Pentium 200 suffice? Don't think so, but i don't know  :(

Here's the problem: we've been using Coyote Linux for a while now, to share a ADSL 640/128 connection. I've even managed to enable QoS in it, so that interactive traffic has precedence over emule traffic. It worked great.

But having an internet connection always available resulted in 1.7MW (!!) power consumption in 2 months, and an electricity bill of 250 €.

So, no more leaving 6 computers online 24/7.

My idea is to replace coyote linux with a 'normal' linux distribution, set it up as a router, but also be able to run aMule on it 24/7. Add a big disk for all our files, and enable the web interface for aMule control from all our computers.

Is it real?  ?(
Can it be done?
Am I crazy?  :)

I used a P200MMX for that task with a slackware 9.1 and amule with not too many problems controlled with vnc. It is a bit slow, but it is mainlly due to grphical interface and xvnc that I use to control it. Until u keep amule minimized and lists hidden it works fine (never more then 50% cpu usage). Now I replaced it with a k6-2 300Mhz.

In my lan I have 3 pc connected to the router and even if amule and xvnc use cpu to 100% it can handle the traffic to/from the lan fine.

You can have problems if you put in dl many files (more than 20 files) with many sources.

Regarding webinterface I'm not using it because I have some problems with it, and I know that it is being rewritten, but I'm sure that it will be faster then vnc and use less cpu time.

Great! So it can be done!  :)

Is that caused by a slow CPU or a lack of memory, what do you think? We were talking about this 'project' ;) of ours yesterday, and some said that a 40 GB HDD would not suffice for all our temp files. They may be exagerating but my guess is that there will be quite a few files (30-40) downloading. Would more memory help? 96 MB?

And another thing... we're all noobs concerning linux. I mean, we're able to do a basic install of some popular distribution (Mandrake, Redhat,...) but we're completly incompetent when it comes to setting it up in the way that I described. Any suggestions where we could find some help? Some FAQs, guides, linux security and networking for newbies or something like that?
ANY suggestion would be very appreciated  :)
