Title: Please help! amule does not connect!

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place.

I am running Mac OS 10.4.11 and amule 2.2.2

I have updated my router to accept TCP and UDP as per amule, I've changed my up/download speeds and substituted the blank server.met file with http://ed2k.2x4u.de/kq6ap23e/max/server.met as amule can not connect to http://gruk.org/server.met.gz to download the latest server list.

On startup amule says "Servers: Trying to connect" but never connects to anything.  I have tried downloading the latest servers fro within amule but have not succeded.

Install latest version,

compile/install aMule version 2.2.2

upload,
As a rule it is important that on ADSL neither the uplink nor the downlink be used at 100% capacity. Usually 90-95% is a good idea (taking into account overheads too.
if your not up to testing your own connection using 75%-90& of your 'real' upload capacity will be fine
test at http://www.speedtest.net/ for example:

367/8*0.75 = 34 rounded down to 30

connections
most routers don't like udp packets, so some, disable KAD or any udp all together, this can get it more stable.
also safe options for virtually everyone are;

max connections: 200
max new connecitons in 5 secs: 10
and no more then 3000 sources at one time.

i don't have a router (direct connection on arch with iptables) so in theory i can have as many connections as i like,
but i personally use really low settings beacuse i like low overheads, i use,
conntions: 100
max new: 5
and no more then 1000 sources.

basic formula on how it works;

Number of useful sources is calculated directly from rate value. Max Connections is not relevant.

Reask is every 30 mins = 1800 secs (30x60)

Max 10 per 5 sec = 2 per sec (10/5)

Therefore max sources = 1800 x 2 = 3600

then to avoid hitting the limit and wasting sources we leave a margin of error and round down to 3000 sources (maximum)

Remember that the rate value is determined from your Max Connections limit where it should be set to avoid reaching. This is an inexact science but experience shows 200/10. 400/20, 500/25 etc. work well.

ports
use high ports (above 4000)  i.e. 54662, 54672 and then forward them, and allow through your hardware/software firewall


getting good server list
First make your server options look like this:

Maintaning the list
Only ever update your serverlist if/when Bluetack updates there IPfilter (usually once every one/two weeks)
