Title: Crashes before it's open on a Mac
Post by: Qofcheez on February 01, 2010, 12:53:33 PM
I've tried several versions of AMule, and sometimes when I turn on the computer the icon bounces in the dock then disappears.  Rebooting usually does the trick, but now it will never load no matter how often I reboot.

I've downloaded as many versions as I could, installed, reinstalled, and still it refuses to open, crashing before it even gets that far.

Any ideas?

I'm running OSX Leopard

Try starting it from a terminal to see why it doesn't start.

I've never run anything from terminal before, could you tell me how it's done and what to look for?

Incidentally, I managed to find a version 2.2.2 and it is working right now

(I have been living in Asia for almost 8 years, Amule is pretty much 100% essential for me being able to see western TV and movies)

I did at one point consider it was the Chinese firewall, but it's been all right up until now

applications > accessories > terminal
A small window will open.
Then just type "amule" (without the "") and press enter.
If it doesnt work, there will be a response in that little window / terminal.

Thanks. I've managed to get it to run again.  I have to start my downloads from scratch, but I will note this for the next time this happens (it happens more then I would like)

I have to start my downloads from scratch

Your downloads should be safe, unless you delete everything
before installing a new version.
Your downloads are in your home directory (places > home), and they will still be there if aMule will not run.
You cannot see them yet, so in your home directory  go to "view" > show hidden files
Then you will see lots of folders, including a ".aMule" folder.
Inside that folder there are 2 more folders.
In "Incoming" you will find the completed downloads.
In "Temp" you will find the not yet completed downloads.
If you want to deleted aMule, you can simply secure those files by copying and pasting all of them to a new folder
in your documents folder, for example. So that when you have a new aMule, you can restore those files.

Well I did something incredibly idiotic that deleted the downloads forever before it occurred to me what I had done.

I ran an appdelete program to get rid of the previous amule versions - which of course found and deleted the download folder .  I had been looking at it in the finder window, and saw it was still there - but didn't realize that it was now located in the trashbin instead the home directory and didn't think to confirm

Then I proceeded to clean out my trash can for the first time in months and the amule folder wasn't covered by the time machine backup.

oops.
