I am unable to open downloaded files as well as to preview files. am unable to find the path of my two videoplayers..VLC and Totem Videoplayer...and can't wirte the path in the settings I cannot open PDF or written files either..

Note the open a terminal note. That is to say, use the command "which".

Ugh.
1) Open a terminal. (Command prompt, such as xterm, GNOME Terminal, or something like that)
2) At the appearing command line, enter "which vlc" (without the quotes), and press enter.
3) Post here the output you get.

thank you but it still does not work either That is what I did... what else could be the problem?

Please read again GonoszTopi's post and do what he said. Including step 3.
