Problems with upload/download speed
« on: July 01, 2007, 04:09:50 PM »

Hi, I just installed amule on my mac.  I have used emule for several years with a pc and have no problems with that.  I am trying to set limits to the upload/download connections but its just working the opposite way.

For upload speed I put in 12 and for download 80.  But it is uploading at 45 and downloading at 15.  Did I do something wrong?  i have checked it several times and cant find anything wrong.  Any sugestions?

your help will be greatly appreciated

Notice that there are two limits in the preferences: one is for statistics (where you put your real connection values) and the other is for real down/upload limits. Maybe you configured the wrong one. Also, if you put 12kB/s as your limit but your line allows 45kB/s, you might not download s fast as you want. Try setting a higher limit, like 30 or 35lB/s.

Regards.

I am a recent aMule on Mac installer as well.  I've tested my connection speed several times in the past week, and I keep getting the same ballpark numbers:
Approx. Download Speed: 1250 kbps (159 KB/sec)
Approx. Upload Speed: 630 kbps (80 KB/sec)

My eMule connectivity is also going in the opposite direction.  I am trying to download a half dozen or so large files (300+ MB).

No matter what numbers I plug into preferences for connection speed, the uploads are traveling out at least 4x faster than the downloads traveling in!  Even if i cheat my upload speed down to a crawl (3 kB), the downloads go even lower (.6 kB).  I cannot seem to control who uploads my partial downloads, so my upload window is constantly humming even when the downloads are going nowhere.  The uploads request list is a mile long, so I must be trying to download something really popular.

I didn't sign onto eDonkey to become a partial file whore  - I'm trying to download hard-to-find files I couldn't get elsewhere.  Someone tell me how to stop the uploads avalanche, or get my downloads up to speed.

http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/AMule_is_slow

I've already looked into that:  Even when my settings were set to maximum, the fastest download speed I EVER got was about 11 kbps.  Some of the upload speeds others get from me have exceeded 50 kbps.  Some of the items I'm trying to download have few sources, so I wouldn't expect high speeds.  Some servers list more than 20 sources for a file, and I'm still downloading at a crawl.  I don't mind having to take a few days to download a huge file, but geez, this is ridiculous.

I want to stop uploads altogether to see if that is stealing bandwith speed from downloads - any way to do that?

Well, then you already know about credits, queues and other general things that make ed2k slow for many people - particularly new users - and I don't have to explain these bits.

No there's no way to disable uploading. And if you have a upload bandwidth from 80KB/s, any value below 70 should not influence the download and any value below 50 will be safe for sure. If you set no limit or a limit very close to your bandwidth you'll observe surfing becoming very slow and your ping going higher.

The standard advice: Leave aMule running as long as possible (->queues) and upload as fast as possible (->credits) and you'll get the highest possible download speed for your configuration.

20 are still few sources and (it always depends on the sources. but) the download speed is usually pretty low with few sources.

And your ISP might be limiting you.

So...........

Basically the longer I am a partial file whore, the better my status will be.  I feel like the  slut under the bleachers.

You think credits alone are slowing downloads?
My search speeds are lightning fast, and the upload speed is where it seems like it should be.

This P2P program is by far the slowest downloads I've encountered.  Even on a 56k dialup with Limewire they were transferring faster!

Is there a way to toggle specific downloads active/not active, so I can 'park' an exceptionally slow file?  I cannot see the point of constantly uploading the only 3.5 mb I have from a 600 MB file.

Credits are not slowing downloads, *sigh*, they accelerate your advancement in queues.

You can lower the upload priority in the shared files list in order to prefer other files. But I recommend uploading files you are downloading in order to get credits.

btw: 56Kbit  = 7KByte < 11KByte ;)

Sorry - I have to reply to twisted math:

"btw: 56Kbit  = 7KByte < 11KByte" - that is true...
- but 11 kB has been the MAX speed I have hit; my average is more like 1.6 kB to 3 kB

Has anyone pulled out the TEMP files for a particular download?  Can they be dropped back in at a later date?  I'd like to "Freeze" about half of my downloads and make them COMPLETELY non-active until the other files have a chance to complete.

You can right click a download and select pause (or stop) so it will be on standby, it will not download a single byte (it will be uploaded, however). You can take the partial downloads out of the temp folder to another, but be sure to move also the .part.met and .met.bak files. Also notice that if you start downloading somthing new, this new download will take the number of the one you removed and you will not be able to put it back in the temp folder until you have finished the other one.

Regards.

Sounds like a Plan!  I'll give it a shot and try to avoid the temptation of downloading more stuff.  I still shudder when I look at that last column that shows the download will be complete in 5 days, 2 hours, etc...  but at least I can limit upload harrassment.
