A collection of broken files. How to finalize them?
« on: July 21, 2006, 06:32:58 AM »

It is more than a year I've been using this fabulous amule. It's my favortite p2p program.
I like rarities to download where only one or two sources available that's why I've run into a situation: there's an enormous list of files which I cannot possibly download anymore. The sources which were present are gone now. Those files take up a lot of valuable disk space. But I don't care much about it. What I care is I'd like to have a look inside them.

Those files seem to be broken or corrupt with empty chunks indicated as red.
What to do with rar or zip archives is more or less clear. There are features in those archivers to restore data.

But the main question is what can be done to a partial mpeg 1-2-4?
There are only two kinds of the video files:
-- having an empty chunk at beginning of the file (1)
-- having (an) empty chunk(s) in the middle / at the end of the file (2)

I believe the amule community must have thought of the increasing number of the files that cannot be downloaded any more. Is there a good solution/a tool to finalize once started files? Of course those empty chunks are lost for good but how to save the rest?
P.S. I know about divfix but it's not universal and can't restore files like (1)

Welcome record!

There's no tool to complete unfinished files in general.
Bu you can play them like normal files. Afaik will you need at least the first part of the file in order to play it with vlc, mplayer or xine. Jus open the xxx.part-file with the player and it should play the file.

Thank you for the reply.
Only I know I can play some of the partial videos, that's the way I keep the files in order disposing of the trash.
But there are rather numerous files without a starting chunk, some of them are in the list for a year or so.
Since I cannot view what's inside them and there is no remedy to finalize them, may be the best solution is to permanently delete them?;(

yup if they are a year old you can surely delete tehm, I would say if a file takes longer then a month or two you can delete it for sure, its a dead file which is leftover

there is alos a nice collum on the tranfer tab -> last time seen complete

if this is still "unkonwn" or a really long time ago, kill the file
