directories
« on: May 30, 2005, 05:03:56 AM »

well finally the files are downloading *REALLY* slowly but i can't seem to find any of the files.  do files only show up in "Username/documents/aMule Downloads" if they're complete? i checked the preferences and that's the path but nothings in there.  also last night i had 7Gb left on my HD and now i've only got 4.8G, which means something is being downloaded *somewhere* please if anyone could help me clear this up, i don't have enough space on my powerbook's HD to begin with. (i have two external HDs; yes i'm a downloading freak :P)  btw i began checking the FAQ but that's not a real big help since i'm at a loss on how to view hidden files and directories--unrelated question is why is it hidden??

thanx for all the help :))

heh

well 1st thing:
you will only see finished files in the "aMule Downloads" folder, the temporary unfinished files will not be there.
you will know when a download is done, when in the amule-gui on the download tab, the progress bar is completly green.

2nd:
your hdd space goes down, when your files have more then 9,98mb downloaded, then amule allocates the complete diskspace for the file. so even if the file maybe only has 50mb complete, you will lose more space on the hdd.

3rd. to make use of your space on the external hdds, you can simple change the path in hte amule-preferences to the location of the external hdds. you can change the temporay directory aswell as the incomming directory. and then both will be unhidden of course. not only the complete folder. just make sure, whenever you start amule, that those external dirve is connected, or otherwise amule will, of course, not find your downloads.

4th to see the contents of amules hidden dir I think you can use the finder of Mac, but nor sure.
and the reason why its hidden. its a *nix standart, that programms settings and prererence files are hidden in the users homedir because you usually dont need to adjust them, or if you have to there are tools.

making files visible

thanx for the info. i figured that much about allocation since other programs do that. tried the finder but it doesn't work either.  i'm not sure how to make hidden files visible since i haven't had to do that in a very long time.

thanx again tho :))

well what you could do is
open a terminal
and type in your homedir

ls -la

this works probably on any unix system ;)

To view the hidden files using OS X's Finder, select 'Go to Folder' in the Finder menu (keyboard shortcut: shift-apple-G). In the resulting text entry field, type
Code: [Select]
~/.aMuleand the contents of the directory will then be visible.

if you change the file directories abrutly to an external HD location does that mean all the downloads have to start again or become inert? or does everything get copied to the new location?  also if i want to cancel a download and it's not done yet how the hell do i make sure it's not hidden somewhere within my powerbook HD taking up space??

thanx :)

if you change the location of the temp files, which already startet downloads you have to copy them YOURSELF to the new directory!! otherwise when you restart amule, you will think all your downloads are lost.

about the chancel, well if you chancel it from within amule, all files which belong to the download will get deleted, so nothing wil be left in your temp dir...

pitchxytr, the partially downloaded files are the ones you saw in ~/.aMule/Temp.  You didn't recognize them because they don't have their final name yet.  Instead they have a temporary name like 001.part and 001.part.met.  When they are completed, they get moved to the aMule Downloads directory and renamed to their final name.

To see which .part file corresponds to a given download, ctrl-click (right-click) on the download in aMule.  One of the items in the context menu that comes up is "Preview [nnn.part]", with the appropriate part file name.  This info is also listed in the file details dialog.

lol yea figured as much. but it still hasn't been resolved whether or not once a download is cancelled mid-coatus that it gets moved to the trash.  also i set my preview program to vlc in the preferences but when i try and preview a download it doesn't do anything.  i'm not too worried about the preview thing as i am a very patient woman, however, the problem of have 69 files in my temp folder but only 23 currently downloading is something that worries me.  i haven't added any new downloads in the hope that once the current ones are downloaded they can be safely moved to an external HD and the aMule preferences changed to an offsite location.

anyone know how to fix this "problem"?

OK, first: when you Cancel a download, all of its associated files (nnn.part, nnn.part.met, nnn.part.met.bak) are deleted.  They are not moved to the Trash, they are just deleted outright.  Note that there are three files in the Temp dir for each download, so you would expect there to be 69 files for 23 downloads.

Preview is only available after the file's first chunk has been successfully downloaded.  Even then, depending on the file format and codec and which chunks have been completed, the preview might still not work.

You can safely move the files to an external HD without waiting for them to complete.  Do this:
  • Create the directories you want to use for Temp (partial downloads) and Incoming (completed downloads).  They don't have to have those names, you can name them whatever you want.
  • Quit aMule
  • Move the contents of ~/.aMule/Temp to your new Temp dir.  Move the contents of ~/.aMule/Incoming to wherever you want.  These completed downloads don't have to stay in your chosen Incoming directory, although it's good manners to continue to share them for a while after you've downloaded them.
  • Start aMule.  It still refers to the old Temp directory, so it will come up without any downloads in its download list.  Also, it still refers to the old Incoming directory, so it may be sharing fewer files (or none), too.
  • Change the preferences to point to your new directories.
  • Restart aMule.  It will read your .part files from your new Temp directory and share the files in your new Incoming directory.  Whatever downloads were in progress will continue as before.
