New to aMule - connection questions from non-techie
« on: July 30, 2006, 05:18:50 PM »

This is the first time I have ever tried this software. It launches with no problems, then I get this message:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2006-07-30 15:59:27: WARNING: You have recieved Low-ID!
2006-07-30 15:59:27: Most likely this is because you're behind a firewall or router.
2006-07-30 15:59:27: For more information, please refer to http://wiki.amule.org
2006-07-30 15:59:27: New client ID is 10771245
2006-07-30 15:59:27: Saving of server-list completed.
2006-07-30 16:01:51: Credits: Error while verifying identity: BER decode error
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have searched the forums and realise that this is most likely caused by something to do with the NetGear router I'm using (I have two Macs connected to it), which has a built-in Firewall. However, I tried reading through some of the help guides relating to Ip stuff and to say I'm completely confused by all this is a complete understatement.

Is there any software which will automatically set everything up for me? I really have no idea about IP adresses and port forwarding etc. Does each piece of software connected to the web require its own port? I also use the BitTorrent client Tomato.

Surely I'm not alone at being rather confused about this. Can somebody help me to get aMule running faster? Presently I'm downloading at speeds of around 0.5 - 2.5 kb/s.

Thanks for reading!

Here's my usual quick reply for port forwarding issues:
Quote
You need to forward the ports that aMule uses in your router. Take a look at http://portforward.com/routers.htm, that page has detailed step-by-step instructions for pretty much every router on the market.

aMule uses three ports (see Preferences->Connection) that need to be forwarded:
  • a client TCP port
  • a client UDP port (this is the above port +3)
  • and an eMule extended UDP port
You can use the connection tester to check whether the client TCP port is forwarded properly.

Good luck. :)

The first link contains simple step-by-step instructions with screenshots for a huge number of routers. Unfortunately, there is no software to automatically set up your ports, but if you follow the above instructions you should be fine.
On the bright side, once you have figured out how to forward ports in your router, you will be able to also set up port forwarding for TomatoTorrent (which uses different ports than aMule). This should get you somewhat better download speeds in that app as well.

Oh, before I forget, you can only forward a given port to one computer. So if you want to run aMule (or TomatoTorrent) on both machines, you need to use a different set of ports on the second computer (you can change those in the aMule preferences) and forward that second set of ports to the second computer.

Many thanks for the advice. I've just realised that I can log directly into my router's admin settings and make the alterations etc in there. I think It will still take some more headscratching before I fully understand all this though ;-)

Thanks lionel77, that allowed me to actually avoid the low ID message for the first time!  :baby:

One other note for OS X is to also open the same ports on the OS X firewall in System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall, making a new rule for aMule. The port-check page finally gave me the green light only after I remembered to do that (after using the portforward.com site to successfully set up my router).

Cool!

Glad I could help. Thanks for pointing out the firewall configuration, I will include a note about it in the future, in these kinds of contexts.
