Preview, is that available?
« on: September 16, 2006, 01:54:32 PM »

Hi all,

I went to Preferences-Directories

I choosed totem as a previewer and checked the box so as to create a backup file.

I right-click on a file in the transfer screen. I get a list of options. Preview [001.part] is there but it is not highlighted so it is impossible to preview the file.

I read  http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Usage_Preferences#Directores

and http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/AMule_problems#Why_can't_I_preview_a_file?

Well, the file are actually greater than 256k and have known video extension. But still I can't preview.

They say: go to temp directory and manually preview the file. How? Files are actually part of the downloading [and part extension] and I am assuming they should be somehow converted  or handled into mpg, avi or the like. The question is how. Of course, neither totem nor kaffeine actually knows how to handle them when I manually call them in the temp directory.

Or, just simply, is it possible to preview files with amule 2.1.0, and how?

thanks in advance

start a terminal (or switch to a console)

Code: [Select]
$ cp .aMule/Temp/001.part .aMule/Temp/001.avi
*wait*
$ totem .aMule/Temp/001.avi

if that doesn't work, you don't have the 'preview'-parts yet (usually, the first and last chunk), some files are not able to be previewed with missing chunks at all

Thanks pleur,

I got the point,
In fact I got recently the first chunk of a download and I were able to preview it even from aMule. Also, from a console.

So, I'll take it easy and wait for the first/last chunk

On AVI files you always have to have the last chunk to be able to preview the file because all pointers are located in the last bytes. You also need the first chunk since this is where the contents and codec are listed.

This is why in the preferences section of aMule you can check "retrieve first and last". Check that, and most likely you'll be able to preview a lot sooner.
