IP-filtering
« on: January 17, 2007, 03:09:55 PM »

Hi everyone
I get the impression that the IP-filtering thing is for security. In preferences in this part, it has "enable ip-filtering" automatically selected. But where it says "url" there is nothing written. Should there be something writtene there? What should I write there?
Thank you!
Justin

(I did check the page on this site about it, http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/IPFilter#Using_the_IP_Filter_in_aMule
but the info seemed to be from 2005, so I figure those urls might be out of date or the whole instruction may be different.)

At least the bluetack sources are still maintained (although they are sometimes offline ATM, just try later then).
BTW: Using IP-filters never can give you full security. They are more for reducing problems with fake servers/users.

So the bluetack thing, what do I do exactly? Just put an url in that space? What url exactly?
And, is there anything else I should do?
Thank you

Preferences - IPFiltering - Security - URL: http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/nipfilter.dat.gz

or if you´re paranoid use http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/pipfilter.dat.gz instead.
Info about the blocklists is here:
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=FAQ&myfaq=yes&id_cat=6&categories=Blacklists+FAQ

You could also use an IP-Blocker like PeerGuardian from phoenixlabs.org. That would not only filter amule´s traffic but your whole system´s traffic.
But only do one of those things. Don´t download the blocklists twice and waste bluetack´s bandwith.

There exists also more security orientated P2P-software that you could use instead of amule. But I don´t know it, i love my mule ;-)

Excellent - thank you very much! There is also there in that part of preferences, a number, "Filtering Level", and it is set at 127. Is that the right number? (I have no idea what it is about!)
Thanks again for all the help.

The wiki tells us that it´s ok. Bluetack´s ipfilter.dat has values of 000 which are less than 127 and so are filtered.
Cheers

Like you said, I put in that url under Preferences - IPFiltering - Security - URL:
That was a while ago now (2 weeks ago). But now I go to check that again and there is no url there anymore! Is that normal? Is it still working? Is it meant to disappear? I was kind of expecting it to be still there, but hey I don't know about these computer things. But I thought i had better ask you guys to make sure.

If this tells you anything, on my download page it says
"Clients on queue : 237 (23 Banned)
I mention that in case it is the ip filtering which is banning them.
Anyway, what do you think? Is it as it should be? Or should I put the url in again or something?

Thank you!

Hi, my aMule on Ubuntu Gutsy has crashed everytime, when I load this list (http://www.bluetack.co.uk/config/pipfilter.dat.gz) into programm.
Is this impossible to load a blocklist on linux?

New: It is a bug in the wxWidgets library. bad rabbit animation caused to close aMule. Fixed in development version.
You can find packages for your distro in this section: http://forum.amule.org/index.php?board=70.0
