album sharing.
« on: March 21, 2008, 06:58:08 AM »

This would probably have to be implemented in all clients at a time... but its an idea:
The main problem ive found with the edonkey/kad network is that its pretty hard to find music compared to other p2p apps.

Create a new search category specifically for music. To do this, youll have to allow people to share music by album, which means:
-Creating a new type of hash for albums which consists of the hashes of its member songs. This way not all people can have the whole album, but if they have select songs, those can contribute to the sharing.
-creating a new search code to return albums by keyword based on this hash.
-integrate the libraries of music player applications: winamp itunes etc. This must be since not all people organize their library in the file directory, but their player does.

I think that would be difficult to implement (the way i see it). If you have the complete album, then just compress it to one big file and release it that way. Or create a .emulecollection file and release this file along with the individual songs, but changing the hashing system seems not a good idea. Also, aMule is for sharing files in general, not only music, so no need to make it that specific.

Regards.

This would need server code change.

Same as the above.

-integrate the libraries of music player applications: winamp itunes etc.
No way.

Your idea is wrong in so many levels. Pls, get yourself some CS books from local university.

lfroen, stop being condescending to the users. It's cool that you're a genius and all that, but the average user isn't and he is trying to contribute an (ill-conceived) idea, which can be accepted or declined in Gonosz's way (education) without the need for your extra patronizing remarks.

I mean, have your opinion and all (as we all do), but try not to be an asshole to the users.

Actually, i thought the idea would be impossible to implement. But since I dont actually know that much about about programming beyond simple stuff i work out myself, maybe someone else would figure it out. TBH Ive only tried downloading music once with aMule. Its pretty hard to get an entire album with consistency to quality etc. I dont anymore. Figured I would point this out though, maybe someone has a better idea. To the replys:

A zipped file would be unlikely to be shared long, as most people unzip the file and delete it, due to them wanting to use the music at any given time. While this works for say... a manga chapter, it wont work for music albums.

A .emulecollection file would pretty much work, if it is what i think it is. Ive never seen one though, since i always search through the search feature on aMule, and id guess this is something you grab from a private forum. Ive been to one forum like this ever. Since these wouldnt be accessible through the clients search... its not something to be discussed here. I was looking for a solution that would be clean and simple. Yes changing the server-search code is what i meant, when i said it would have to be implemented on all clients at a time. Pardon my lack of clarity lfroen, but im lazy.

The idea may be ill conceived, but i hope my intention was clear.

That's what I tried to say, sorry for being too offensive. Your intention is clear, but as you say - it's impossible to implement without fundamental change in server code (at least)

Without talking about implementation difficulties, I'd just like to point out why I think this request is not really relevant: I think this is not about what the software should do, but about what users should do. aMule is there for us to share files, any kind of files, regardless of their content; it is not a file manager. What we share and how we present it is up to us.

It's true that many file names are cryptic, or cannot be identified by their title. For example, for music files, I put the album's name, track number and title in the file name. This is because I've decided to share the file, so I have to let people know what it is. I don't expect aMule to do that work for me. Too many formats, too many systems, too many specifics.

I'm not sure I'm being clear but, briefly, instead of asking aMule (or a similar software) to do ultra-specialised stuff, how about educating users on practices that would make everybody's life easier? If there are forums of users discussing what they, the users, can do to improve p2p, that info (links) could be made obvious to the lambda user (as in the log tab, a splash screen, the About box, you name it).
