Trayicon forever
« on: August 02, 2008, 04:28:12 PM »

 Hi there,

I have been using aMule since Ubuntu 6.06. I think it's one of the best emule-like programs out there. Indeed it makes the downloads faster than most other emule clients running under Windows, and the new features like the support for >4Gb filesize it is a quite nice enhancement.

But, the traycon has been a problem so far, not matter what aMule version I tried. It disappears from the system tray randomly in Ubuntu or it does not appear at all when restarting... I mean, that happened in Ubuntu 6.06, then it also had such capricious behaviour in Ubuntu 7.04 and in 7.10. But it is still worse now in Ubuntu 8.04.

Now, it can disappear while running: you just make a double click in the aMule icon to maximize the program and... you likely will lose the icon and if you minimize again aMule... You won't be able to maximize aMule again!

Also, if you want to make aMule to autostart minimized to system tray... likely you won't get such work done. Not in a consistent manner, at least.  You may get the icon there one time, and you may not the next time. Or even the aMule trayicon will show partially only the next one (!?).

Or, you may get the aMule trayicon appearing... somewhere in the desktop.

In Kubuntu it works better, however.

One additional note: I now use DreaMule 3.2 in Ubuntu 8.04... I remark that it is a Windows app running under Linux, by using Wine. I made DreaMule to autostart minimized to the system tray and... it always works! The program starts nicely and its icon always appears in the tray system.  ::)

Regards,
Victor
