LowID vs. HighID: why do I get more speed?
« on: September 09, 2004, 12:20:08 PM »

Hello all!

I noticed now already a few times that when I get a LowID, my client downloads more stuff and also at higher speeds (almost my full bandwidth).

Is it normal? Why does this happen? I actually meant that "HighID" should mean a bettere chance to get downloads working, but it doesn't seem so!

Any explanations are appreciated!

Thank you!

BonnyFused,

It does not make sense. The fact that you are HighId, means that you are able to connect to LowId sources to download stuff, something you can't do if you are LowId. This is the only difference when it comes to download sources. Everything else can be done by a LowId client through the use of the server.

One possible explanation could be that when you are on HighId, you get more sources and for the files you have choosen these extra sources are "worst" than the sources you get when you are LowId. Anyway, it would be too much lack of luck if that *always* happened.

Cheers!

I fully understand the difference between LowID and HighID. It's just in the number of sources I can get, right?

Well, if no other explanation is available, I've to admit that I'm an UNLUCKY guy!!! I can assure you that it *always* happens the way I describe: LowID = full bandwidth downloads - HighID = almost nothing gets downloaded! :(

Really no other considerations?!?

Thanks anyway...

It's a BUG! :)

OK, I've just talked to Kry and he's been telling me that this behaviour is a BUG, which should be fixed with RC6!

Thanks Kry!

Ciao

As I installed RC6, uprading from RC5 on my Debian SID, I got the same behaviour, if not worse:
I start up aMule, I get connected to the server, get a HighID.
After more than 5 hours, still no downloads happening, although I have plenty of sources. The same status is the day after (so more than 24 hrs. online).
The bad news is that with RC5 I was able to get a "LowID" just closing and restarting aMule (dunno why this happened). With RC6 this doesn't work anymore...

Anybody can help?

Why do you want a Low ID? Low Id is what happens when other clients cannot reach you. Trust me, you dont want a low id.

Cheers!

Wanting LowID...
« Reply #6 on: October 12, 2004, 02:42:53 PM »

... it's not that I *need* LowID. It's just that I noticed with RC5 that when my client was LowID (which, as far as Kry told me, didn't really happen, but was just kinda mismatch between client and server) I got full-throttle.
Now I would *at least* may re-create that situation with RC6, which actually seems impossible, tough.

Any help?

close your TCP port (the one aMule uses) through firewall or whatever (iptables for example) and you'll get LowID.

Greetings

OK, I did it and guess what? I actually got *real* LowID.
That's a huge difference with regards my previous situation as with RC5: in that case, I actually got LowID as a number, but not the information from the remote server that I was LowID. I hope you understand what I'm saying.
Before (with RC5): I connect to the server, actually got HighID, but aMule showed LowID. Downloads went full-throttle. If aMule showed HighID, I just wasn't downloading (like in RC6 now).
Now (with RC6): I connect to the server, aMule shows HighID but I don't download (almost) at all.

Kry, can you take a look at this? Everybody else too, obviously!  ;)
