Please.

If I want to open a link in a seperate window, let ME decide. 99 out 100 times, this is not what I want to do. I either want to open the link in a new tab (for which I use a different mouse button) or I want to open it in the same window.

Especially considering that the majority of users on this site are presumably running Linux... and therefore likely not Internet Explorer, but rather a Tabs-cabable browser (whether Opera, Firebird, Mozilla or whateever), using targets for in all but extreme circumstances seems really misplaced.

Sincerely,

fyodor

I agree completely about killing "_blank" :) Its almost as bad as using popups for any page. It should be the user's choice how they want to browse.

Mozilla to the rescue: change "browser.block.target_new_window" to true. This can be changed in "about:config" and possibly in the prefs.js file in your .mozilla dir (danger, backup, not my fault). Works for galeon too.

Thanks for the  "browser.block.target_new_window" hint!

I've immediately changed this setting on all my boxes (both Win and Linux, all running Firebird).

Of course, it doesn't prevent people from using weird JS to open links in new windows, but this may even be a good thing (since this is what people use to open small "help" windows and the like).

Sincerely,

fyodor
