Sorry guys, but I'll end up this discussion with the following statement: Gi, Ki and Mi are no official abbr. for what it stands for: 10^9, 10^3 and 10^6 (G,k and M are). So it will never pass a DIN ;Oþ And no matter what "the leading international organization for worldwide standardization in electrotechnology" reconed out, if there is no german industrial standard, there is no existance too!! So no MiB needed here ;OD

(ok, its a lill bit joking about german standards, but there is also a lill bit truth in it ;O))

You might have misunderstood something. Ki, Mi and Gi prefixes are meant to mean 2^10, 2^20 and 2^30, respectively.

No, they called it kilobinary with abbr. kibi. But it is an older and still valid standard to abbreviate kilo  with k, mega with M and giga with G. k eg means nothing else than 1000 of whatever, 1000 gramm are 1kg. And thousand equals 1*10^3 (qed  :D). So, if they call it kilo ~, they should use k ~.

That's simply amazing how match energy people can put in such useless standartization , followed even more useless discussions.
Just a small example from another area. Do you know that there're still several definitions to the term "mile" ? I know about 3 (three) ! It come even more complicated when comes to speed measurement. How many of you know why speed in US is "mile per hour" (which of three miles btw?), in Europe is kilometer per hour, and on the see it's knots, while 1 knot = nautical mile per hour.

Now tell me, if file size is measured in1024 units, but speed of network in 1000 units, how  (in which units) would you like to display "speed in which file is downloaded ?!".

So, while being interesting from theoretical point of view, this discussion have no practical implication.

Thy shalt measure information in bits. And entropy is information.

This is written in the book. Praise Lord Shannon, successor of Lord Kelvin. Burn in Hell you infidels who do not believe this!

Btw, kilometers were invented to put an end to the miles crap. But english people are so stubborn...

"Hark," quoth the penguin, "Raise thine eyes and discern the coming of the Ancient One that is prophesied smite the infidels with a burning vengence.  BEHOLD! The Third Coming of the KROKODIL is nigh, bringing forth the blessing and the maladiction foretold by the squatty flightless Harbinger of the KROKODIL.  Woe be upon the heathens, and rejoice thee, believers!"

We should go back to using real standards, like feet and inches, which will also remove the need for carrying a ruler .... except for you misfits whose legs and fingers are the wrong sizes! Damn freaks, the lot of you!
