Massive aMule OOM on exit
« on: March 24, 2005, 05:22:41 PM »

Hey,

this is also a linux kernel issue, as the problem massively blocked the entire machine. I couldn't even log in at the console, that's how bad it was.

I exited amule around 17:50 and pretty much immediately the whole system stopped responding and my hd went crazy.

Mar 24 18:12:35 localhost kernel: Total swap = 500432kB
Mar 24 18:12:35 localhost kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 31695 (amule).
Mar 24 18:12:37 localhost hald[4076]: Timed out waiting for hotplug event 1054. Rebasing to 1056
Mar 24 18:12:45 localhost lircd 0.7.1pre2[4053]: removed client
Mar 24 18:12:45 localhost lircd 0.7.1pre2[4053]: closing '/dev/input/event0'

After amule was killed the system seemed to be responding much better again.

Well, I have no backtrace, as it didn't crash and everything was unresponsive.
It could (possibly) have something to do with the systray, but the only thing that points to that is that the icon disappeared, but the space wasn't closed.
It could be that I quit aMule during the final hashing of a completely downloaded file. I'm not sure about that.

Everything GPL on my computer though ;)

Hope you'll find that really _nasty_ memory leak or whatever was causing this.

Should I post this on the kernel list? After all it took over 10 minutes for the kernel OOM to react.

djtm,

One option is to try wx-2.5.4 or wx-cvs. There were some mem leak fixes already. Anyway, aMule with gtk2 + unicode is known to leak a lot. This might not be aMule issue, but we dont know yet. Tell me, how long was aMule running before this happened? And how much memory do you have in your machine? Were you doing something particularly different before this happened?

Btw, I don't think this is a kernel issue. Make sure it is not aMule or any other program related before posting to lkml. People are not very patient around there.

Cheers!

Okay,

it has been running a couple hours (2-4) before. I didn't do anything special. Opened it from systray, say that the download's finished, and clicked on the close button in the upper right corner.
Gradually after that the memory(512MB) went full, then the swap(512MB) was also filled and the system stopped responding almost completely.
It seemed to have just finished, but I think the hashing was done, and it said finished and the download bar was uhm green or orange, showing it was done.

Well, Im on vacation the next week, maybe I can't respond till then.

Do you mean you have the same amount of memory as you have swap? I dont think this is a good thing, IIRC, you should have at least the double to avoid swap storms.

Maybe the leak is deterministic, if we could complete a lot of files then maybe we could leak faster and catch it in say, valgrind. I will see if I can set up a test.

I had the same prob 2 hours ago. I decided to wait till it solves itself, but 5 minutes ago I decided to do a hardware reset, because nothing reactet (it took 7 minutes till the numlock status got changed). I don't think that the systray could cause this prob, because I don't use it. The last thing I saw, was that top said amule used 99.9% cpu, and 83.4% mem.
It ran since yesterday morning.

Hum, pretty strange, I run aMule here for 3 or 4 days before gtk2 leaks enough for me to consider it is time to exit aMule. And even then I can do it gracefully. And I have about 500 files in my download queue and a lot of shares.

I didn't leak before I tried to exit amule. I just exitet to update. That's the real strange thing.
