After reloading my thousands of shares, which takes a small eternity, I find that my Kademlia status has been set to firewalled due to timing out because the reloading mechanism locks up aMule for the duration of the process. Now, I know aMule checks periodically for connectivity, but does it continue to do that after it's found to be firewalled? And, if not, why isn't there a method to recheck firewalled status apart from the current way of downloading a new nodes.dat file?

It does recheck.
As for rechecking, you could always disconnect/connect kad.

It does recheck.
I see from the code it does it once an hour. That's kind of a long interval, IMO. Couldn't we have a manual button to fire off a KADEMLIA_FIREWALLED2_REQ packet on-demand? I was kind of getting used to that feature in eMule and I don't like fscking up my routing table if I don't have to.

After the GUI is unlocked, sure.
