Smile Mac face on desktop?
« on: March 19, 2006, 09:56:16 AM »

Hi folks

A few times when I've returned to my machine after leaving aMule running, I've found a smiley Mac face on my desktop, just under where the widget icon appears at the end of my dock and this face remains on top of any other windows I open until I reboot the machine. It appears to be pretty malign but I am dead curious to find out why and how it keeps appearing there

FYI I am running aMule 2.1.0 on a Powerbook G4 15" 1.67mhz running OS X 10.4.5

As always my utmost thanks in advance to anyone who takes the trouble to respond to my pesky query
Kind Regards
Bernard

Could you maybe take a screenshot of that and post it here?

You can do this from within Prewiev.app, just go to File->Grab->Selection. Then select the area of the screen that contains the smiling face and attach the picture here as png or jpg.

Thanks for getting back to me Lionel

I logged out and logged back in and this got rid of it, but I am pretty sure it will appear again and when it does I'll tale a screenshot for you to see

Although all it is is the same icon you are using as your avatar sitting on my desktop, but it is not a file of any sort. I would say that the smiley mac had somehow been added to the aqua or kelp desktop background but then this would not account for the fact that it remains in view floating on top of any other window / application I open but it is not something I can click on or drag anywhere, as it stays in the exact same spot at the bottom of the screen to the left hand side, where the widget icon is at the end of my dock when I make it appear

Much appreciate you going to the bother of replying as I am dead curious to find out how it gets there (if not a little concerned as to whether someone has somehow sent it to my Powerbook

Well, first of all, the icon that lionel77 uses as his avatar is just the icon for the Finder in Mac OS X.  It almost always appears in the dock as the first item.  (I suppose you could reposition it within the dock, but it should always be there.)  If it wasn't appearing in the dock before, that indicates a bug.  From your description, it sounds as if the icon is now appearing detached from the dock and nonfunctional.  That also indicates a bug.  Neither of these things sounds like a problem caused by aMule.

If I were you, I'd boot from your install CD/DVD and use Disk Utility to repair your boot volume.  Then, I'd perform an Archive and Install with Preserve User and Network Settings enabled (use the Options button in the installer).  Then, when you restart to your newly reinstalled system, reapply any updates suggested by Software Update.  WARNING: make sure you have a good backup.  While this procedure should not be destructive to any of your data or applications, you never know.  This procedure isn't very complicated, but if you feel unsure of yourself, you might have a professional do it for you.

Hi Ken

Sorry if I am being a bit obtuse and more than a little stupid. The smiley Mac icon wasn't appearing in the dock. I only mentioned the dock to give an idea of where it was placed on the screen which was just about where the widget icon appears in my dock when its was unhidden. But I've just realised that under normal circumstances the smiley Mac icon is the last item in the dock and I guess it had somehow disappeared from here and left its image on the screen. The weirdest thing was that it also remained floating on top of every other window I opened

But I seem to recall the same thing happening on my old laptop after leaving aMule running for ages and after restarting the machine it has returned to its normal place at the left of my dock rather than on my screen

Appreciate you taking the trouble to respond. I guess it must just've been a temporary glitch
