i can't run amule at all, the window opens but i get the following error message:
"Alert - Couldn't contact Spell Checker"
what does this mean?
i've tried version 2.1.2 and had the same problems, please help,
thanks

Have you installed a third-party spell-checker service? I did some searching on the net, and this seems the most likely culprit. The solution may require that you Archive and Install (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120) the OS. (Make a backup just to be certain, but this should not be a destructive action.)

i did not install a 3rd party spell checking service. the only thing i did before amule started crashing the Apple.Spellcheck was updating to tiger 10.4.8 and new firmware. the spell checker runs just fine, I can use it for hours with TextEdit. But once I try to open amule, it crashes... it used to work perfectly before the updates.

There was a similar report (http://forum.amule.org/thread.php?threadid=10873) already two months ago. Unfortunately, the original poster never got back to me.

i have the strong impression that aMule itself is causing the spell service to crash. it doesn't crash with textedit, but once crashed with aMule, spelling stops working with all other programs

Well taht can't be aMule problem.

Maybe wx is doing something it is not supposed to do upon aMule startup. The main question, however, is why only very few people seem to be affected by this.
Say, do you have any system hacks installed like Unsanity's Application Enhancer?
-
Can't be wx either. An app, by definition, shouldn't be crashed by other apps.
-
hmm i have installed neooffice, perhaps it has its own spell checker tool/service?
-
I tried installing NeoOffice in the meantime to reproduce the problem, but there was no crash and amule just ran fine. So it does not seem likely that NeoOffice is to blame for your problems.
@Kry
I agree with you, the system wide spell checker *should* not be able to get crashed by an app using it. But given the sequence of events (spell checker crashes the moment amule is started), it looks like this is exactly what happens. Since aMule does not make any explicit use of the spell checker, it seems like the problem could be that wx sends some malformed request to the spell checker, which in turn does not handle that request as gracefully as it should.
@plugues
I just had an idea, could you try starting your Mac in safe-boot mode by holding down shift during startup? That way, no 3rd party extensions and the like would be loaded, and it would be very interesting to see if the spell checker still crashes and aMule refuses to start. Not that this would be a viable long-term workaround, but it might give us a better idea of what is going on.

I had exactly the same problem, and the same error message.
After uninstalling the third-party spellchecker CocoAspell, it disappeared.
For what it's worth...

Thanks a lot for letting us know rkowal70. :)
So I guess people affected by this problem should take another very careful look at their system to see if they did install CocaoAspell or some other 3rd party spell checker after all.
