Title: New skins for: KDE4, Gnome, Ubuntu, Tango, Xfce and Fedora
Post by: deloun on May 28, 2007, 10:56:39 PM
These skins have been updated in the meantime, look for this topic for the new skins: http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=13192.0

I've made some new skins by collecting/modifying existing icons to suit with KDE4, Gnome, Ubuntu and Tango. They work with recent cvs or later.

Like discussed earlier, it would be cool if they would be included in default aMule and then can be chosen from a pull-down menu so people can easily choose the skin that nicely fits their system.

*Update: Added Xfce and Fedora skins, see page 2. *

Very nice. :)

Will it be ok to ship them in future versions of aMule?

Sure, like discussed earlier, it would be cool if they would be included in default aMule and then can be chosen from a pull-down menu so people can easily choose the skin that nicely fits their system.
I should've mentioned it, I'll add it to my first post for clarity.

Cool, I'll add in my packages :)

However, about Oxygen theme, the dev-team prefer if people don't use its icons before of the kde4 release...

Yes but atm kde4 is pretty close and there are already kde4 preview livecd's and there seem to be packages in repo's to upgrade to it, and according to programs to use it I assume that won't apply to svn's then, don't you think?

I don't know... I've simply read from the oxygen authors that actually their works can't be redistributed... Strange but true, maybe now is changed, but who knows... :)

Ah you mean about the license. Last year there was a license that restricted the distribution of them to keep them 'fresh'. But they now changed the license and they are now licensed under a creative commons share-alike license, so it's now legal to distribute them.

Thanks a lot for your work deloun!

The xfce skin is included in tomorrows tarball. I have not included the Fedora skin as it is very similar to the gnome skin (only the folder icon is different), but I can change the folder icon if you think it would be a better choice.

I'll have a look at the full-tango skin later again.

Nice work on the implementation of the skins wuischke, cool! (I just built a new CVS, was still working with a CVS of May this year which hasn't had it implemented yet). Because Fedora 7 uses blue versions of the Gnome folders in the default theme (other then that they use the default gnome theme), the aMule Fedora skin fits nicer with the Fedora 7 theme then the Gnome skin does. So I hope you can reconsider this and you would also include the Fedora skin.
I've updated the Tango skin which makes use of a different preferences icon which I agree with mischamajskij is a better icon to use. You can find the updated skin as attachment of this post.

I've updated my ubuntu skin that integrates the client icons support too...
You can grab it at http://forum.amule.org/index.php?topic=12582.msg70618#msg70618 (see there for shots)

I've decided not to include distro specific skins in the tarball for now, but I encourage including them into distribution packages. That's not because the skins are not nice enough, it's just my obsession with k.i.s.s. ;)

Of course that's no final decision and might be changed if there's enough lobbying. ;)

What means k.i.s.s.?

Keep it simple, stupid. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KISS_principle)

In this case: Don't include too many skins or things get confusing.

It's in the wiki: http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Skins (http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/Skins)

For mac, put the zip file in one of the following directories:
User: ~/Library/Application Support/aMule/skins
System: aMule.app/Contents/SharedSupport/skins

I've updated these skins in the meantime as I wrote in the first post, so look at the following links for the newest skins:
