I still get low ID and firewalled Kad unless I specify port forwarding in my DSL modem. Isn't universal plug and play supposed to remove the need for this?

Only if your DSL modem supports UPnP (and has it enabled).
Port forwarding is always the better solution however, UPnP should only be used if port forwarding is not an option (if you don't have access to the router).

And please don't ask questions in sticky posts.
