Title: amuled memory usage / embedded devices
Post by: toaster23 on November 10, 2010, 01:13:44 PM
i wonder, how much memory amuled needs. of course, this depends on how much files i download and how much i share.

anyways, i wonder to run amuled on really cheap seagate freeagent dockstar which come with 128mb ram and consumes about 8 watts power.
to save some memory i would use openwrt over debian on this device. openwrt uses a lot of memory optimizations, since it usually runs on 16mb ram devices.
of course, i could also activate swap space, but if 128 mb isnt by far enough, that wouldnt help.

there are also some more expensive embedded devices available, which contain 256mb and 512mb ram. but the price difference is huge. about 35€ for the dockstar and 90-130€ for the other devices.

a list of available embedded devices can be found here (http://blogdoch.net/index.php?m=03&y=10&d=07&entry=entry100307-154800&category=37) - ignore the german introduction, the table itself is english.

so, any feedback on this issue would be appreciated. in my opinion, ram is the key here, the 1,2ghz cpu should really be enough.

thanks for your fast reply. so i assume, you also use some kind of embedded distribution?

i expect the memory overhead to be huge, when switching from embedded/uclibc distribution to a full featured distribution like debian.

I'm running on arm9 with 64mb of ram...amuled runs fine! (the bottleneck is the storage...i'm storing using usb high speed not full...tomorrow i'll try to download using an ethernet storage).
