Title: Bandwidth usage problems
Post by: myth on August 06, 2011, 01:18:27 AM
Hi folks,
now I have a pretty cool connection, but aMule doesn't really use it (also some others).

When I use FTP I get download of 1200 KiB/s (yes KiloBytes), and in Upload also 1000-1100 KiB/s!
If I use aMule (with a lot of upload slots, changing also the slotspeed of course) I can't get it over 40 KiB/s, rarely it jumps to 100 KiB/s for some second.

The bandwidth is available. My ISP says they do NOT filter anything, just VOIP gets higher priority.
Now if I download from Netload.in (premium acc) or for ex. Ubuntu http download it stacks at 200-300 max!

So the only one working with full speed is FTP. Is there a way to let aMule's traffic look like FTP?
Or does anybody know why this is like this?

I'm just trying with aMule on port 55555/55556, but no change till yet.
Everytime I mail my ISP they just tell me that everything is ok with my line and they're not filtering anything! :/

Ideas?

Hi myth, with current amule trunk I can reach sustancially higher speeds (both upload and download) so I would investigate other likely causes.

Well, but has anybody an idea where to investigate?

Download: depends mainly on the speed others are uploading
Upload: same, to a lesser degree. What slot allocation have you set? Are even people queued up for your uploads?
How much CPU is aMule taking?

CPU usage is normal, about 5% (DualCore E6400).
It's not aMule's problem i know this.
I tried various slot allocations, but no way.

I was just asking here, hoping I can find someone with networking experience.

Ok, it's definitely my ISP...

They answered me that FTP is not used a lot, so I have lots of free bandwidth with it. All other traffic (http, etc) is very used and this way results in lower speed.

Any way to mask aMule's traffic as FTP? :P

Use standard FTP ports ?  ;)

And I think that's rubbish. There are no protocol dependent bandwidth channels in an IP network.

So how could they prioritize VoIP traffic?

And how can some ISP filter ed2k traffic?

FTP ports? The strange thing: When I download a file with Filezilla it doesn't use 21 or similar!

Ports and packet inspection I should guess. They prioritize one up and one down. What I meant is there is no static reserve of x Mbit for any protocol with a certain reserve left or so.

Ah, that's klar :)

Hmm...packet inspection...a way to get rid of it?

Encryption can help sometimes, but only to a certain degree. I think you can identify ed2k connections even so. You can probably say easily if an IP belongs to a professional or to a private user. if (private to private && !Voip) -> P2P -> throttle. Simple as that.  :(

The strange thing is HTTP traffic throttled as well... :P

So you mean what Stu already said? Packet inspection? That's sad...

Double check the WAN MTU on your router (assuming a broadband connection)

A lot of DSL/Cable broadband uses PPPoE as the protocol and that drops the effective  MTU to 1423 bytes. Setting it higher (usually the default is 1500) can have the effects described

It was automatically set at 1500! Trying with 1420 right now, thanks for the input!

Nope, no way! It's my ISP throttling all traffic which is not FTP (the told me because it's rarely used).

Any way to get rid of the throttling?

Change ISP?

Seriously, if they're throttling unknown traffic then you will have a hard time trying to bypass their mechanism - and trying to do so may put you in breach of the terms and conditions.

It's easier to just find another ISP - and make sure you ask about thorottling before you sign up.

Your old ISP might make a fuss about contracts. The local version of "Service unfit for the purpose for which it was sold" is usually enough to shut them up.

There's no other ISP.
I just changed to them cause of my ADSL line getting always more bad. This new one is WISP (wireless).
They told me they're going to improve their net, so let's wait ;)
