Hi people. Not PC savy but somehow manage.
My system is a Kubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 and I installed amule 2.2.0 from the repositories 3 days ago. Started downloading straight away at 7 kbs - very slow.
I finished one download today of 1.1 gb from 0kbs - 30 kbs . That finished 3 hours ago and have had these problems :
1 - Slow download -
2- Plug and play error - I ticked all the upnp boxes then unticked them and restarted the PC. The plug and play error is not there anymore. Downoading was stopped before.
3 - I have 25 downloads at the moment. As I speak it`s at 0.4 kbs, real slow.
4 - kad firewalled -
In one download which has stopped the source says I have 19/20. This should be good- correct me if I am wrong, but no downloading.
Please help as I have spent afew hours reading your info and my brains a mess.
Thanks. :(

You know, current version of aMule is 2.3.1 . (And current version of Ubuntu is 11.10 btw.)
Stable version before that was 2.2.6. 2.2.0 is not supported any more.
Anyway, if Kad is firewalled you have to forward your UDP port in your router.
19/20 means 19 of you 20 sources are available for downloading. You are queued up for a download slot at them along with hundreds of other users and have to wait for your turn. So that's pretty much standard behavior.
-
Thanks for your reply.
I don`t understand this - "you have to forward your UDP port in your router ".
I have read many manuals but they just end up confusing me even more. I am weiry of modifying my router settings. My isp says the settings are fine.
19/20 , so I am in a queue - ok. What about 6 on it`s own or 6+3 or 1+2 or 7+2. I thought these were seeds. I am used to downloading torrents using ktorrent.
I have entered my ip address to gain access to the router but I can not find udp.
Question is Kad important and does it interfere with ed2k.
Another question - some files are on emule and so how can I get access to ed2k links for a title , then transfer that link to amule. There is a search engine which gives the link for downloading but you need emule. When I try to download that file a message saying , " firefox does not have a program which recognizes ed2k ".
Is there a way around this ?
Yes, I am aware of new versions of amule but is it worth the risk especially to someone like myself with limited tech. Are the new versions so much better , do they forward these ports to your router for you ? and are they faster at downloading. I have users which reach 80 kbs on upload and that probably kills my download speed. I have download set at 1000kbs and upload set at 100 kbs. Same settings as my ktorrent.
I am downloading 25 links . Should I delete some links . I normally download simultaneously 3 - max on ktorrent . Would the same apply on amule ?
Thanks again for helping me out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding
or just google it
Question is Kad important
Kad or ED2K both help you find sources. You can use either or both. Kad is usually better nowadays.
how can I get access to ed2k links for a title , then transfer that link to amule
Just paste your links in the "ed2k link" field at the bottom of the window and click on the "commit" button.
Are the new versions so much better
I hope so. We won't accept bug reports for old versions in any case.
do they forward these ports to your router for you
Only with the "UPnP" feature, which also must be enabled in your router.
are they faster at downloading.
No.
I am downloading 25 links . Should I delete some links .
No.

OK, still confused not totally. Thanks for the ointers. I have looked at the wiki, still confused. I enabled the upnp box and then on the router - yesterday - but after awhile received plug in error and the downloads stopped.
Do I need to check every box that says something on upnp. In preferences > remote servers , there`s a box saying " forward upnp on EC ports " . Do I tick this ?
I will tell you why the confusion. I knew nothing about torrents , didn`t know what one was. One day I was curious - ktorrent came ready installed.
Cutting to the point , I configured only my download folder. Ports were auto to my router.
This is where I get confused I have tweak amule in order for it to work well. Download speeds of 7 bs is frustrating and when u see 25 downloads all stopped u just feel like a lack of control.
I put a question to u but the wording was wrong. Here goes :
- There is a program which Finds that File and it tells u all there is to know about the file u wish to download. It points out that the source is emule, course we use amule.
I click on download and it says u need to install emule . I click on down load file not emule and it says ed2k is not linked to any program in firefox.
- So how , if there is method to get the ed2k link ?
Thanks again.

Right-click, "copy link location". Then paste it into aMule's "ed2k link" field at the bottom of the window and click on the "commit" button.
There is also information in the wiki to set up your browser to call aMule directly, but this is the easiest way.
-
Yes ! That - copy link location - did it, the link went straight to downloads after hitting - commit -Thanks. It`s not downloading anything infact all files are stagnant but atleast your method worked. Great ! :)
Now , I have to find out how to forward these ports.
I`ll give that a go tomorrow.
Thanks again.

Had a go at opening the ports earlier today and under NAT in my router configuration I have the following :
Start Port No. End Port No. IP Address
4662 4665 192. etc..........
clicked save and hoped the coggs roll.
Note : I am using a ZyXEL P660-HW router.
Now just one arrow is green and the other little arrow in the bottom right hand corner of the screen is yellow. In other words Yellow arrow - low and green high. Would have preferred both arrows green.
Maybe this is the best I can get. Downloading 31 with 7 active at a combined 90 kbs +- 10 , so it`s not bad.
I am still getting this Plug and play error but it doesn`t seem to be affecting speed.
Can I fine tune this ? Are the values that I put in the NaT table correct ? Instead of 4665 for the port out value should I have put 4672 ?
FeedbacK would be great.
One other thing - Can I install amule 2.6.6 from the ppa still using my current 2.2.0 or do I need to shut the 2.2.0 down but then I would lose all my downloads ?
Thanks again.

Hi , I managed to fix the High and low ID. Was getting one arrow green and the other yellow , now both are green. I got a positive confirmation from the ED2K information banner.
If anyone`s interested I forwarded the values of all 3 ports onto my router on 3 seperate lines :
Start Port End Port IP Address
1- 4662 4662 192 etc.......
2- 4665 4665 192 etc.......
3- 4672 4672 192 etc.......
Hit save and logout of your router.
Downloading fine , not as fast as a torrent but ok.
Still getting this Plug in Error though.
Just Two other points. I have a 10 mb link speed . I have been fidding about with the settings on upload and download but I am abite confused as to what setting.
So 10 MB => 1000 kb/s Down and 100 kb/s up. This is what I max out at when downloading torrents.
In the wiki it says you should use 80% of your upload . In other words shold my settings be 80 kb/s up and then the wiki says you multiply this by 4 giving me a download speed od 320 kb/s max ; Is this correct ?
Kad seems to work but tried updating the list and it says - Failed to update -
What could be the problem there ?
Thanks very much for all your help.

I see in the other thread you already solved this yourself. So let's keep in one thread.
OK, Yes and no. I installed 2.2.6 and forwarded the 3 ports, closed amule , re-opened and I had green arrows and KAD working fine.
I still seem to get that plug in error though.
Having seen my other thread , in your opinion are my setting ok or should they be different to max out the download speeds ?
One thing I have noticed is that the upload seed in Bandwith is constant at 13 kB/s but download speed goes up and down . At the moment it`s 75 KBs. Most of my 25 files are in blue.
My theory is that if I was downloadin less - say 7 or 8 files , my download seed would pick up.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thans again for your help.

Perfectly normal behavior of any Mule client. Upload is constant at your limit, download varies.
Most of my 25 files are in blue.
Good.
My theory is that if I was downloadin less - say 7 or 8 files , my download seed would pick up.
Wrong. The more files (from different sources) you are queued up for, the more download slots you can get and the faster you can download.
You see, in P2P sum of all uploads == sum of all downloads. So if you upload 13 and download 75 you are actually taking way more than you are giving.
If you are not firewalled anymore, your port settings are fine and you can't improve speed changing them. You didn't tell your available Upload bandwidth, but at 10Mbit download your upload capabilities should be much more. So you can increase it.
UPnP is only a means to get things running without port forwarding. If it works, cool. If not, instead of trying to get it running, directly forwarding the ports is much easier usually.
-
Ok, so I can forget the upnp port forwarding as I have done this already.
My total upload bandwidth on 10 MB is 100 kb/s, so I should divide this by 8 and I get 12.5 kB/s. I put in 13 for my upload.
I was going by the wiki info. In your opinion what should my uload and download bandwidths be for a 1000 kb /s down and 100 kb/s up ?
Thanks for this .
-
i unchecked the upnp boxes and I don`t have plug in error anymore. Thanks.
Download speed is athitic again, 9 kB/s across 4 downloads.
Frustration and know all the parameters are working ok , no firewall , high id , just this download and many people in a queue ( 51 ) .
So is this a waiting game for the down speed to pic up again ?
Torrents are much easier but hey the content of the files i am downloading is rare and there are no torrents or other sources available.

i just looked at my amule log and damn, every 3 sec I get :
retrieving device description from http://169.254.5.69:6549/getDeviceDesc: Unknown Error.
What do I have to uncheck now ? I am sure I unchecked the upnp boxes or is there something else lurking in the background.
I`m done for the night - turning in.
See you all in tomorrow. :)
-
Hi , still getting this error message :
2011-11-30 11:52:00: UPnPBase.cpp(1193): Universal Plug and Play: error(UPNP_DISCOVERY_ADVERTISEMENT_ALIVE): Error retrieving device description from http://192.168.99.130:6549/getDeviceDesc: Unknown Error.
How can I get rid of it !
Help please.
Thanks.
-
That won't happen if UPnP is disabled. Check that all UPnP options are disabled.
-
Hi, Well, I disabled all upnp`s and that plug and play error has gone, fingers crossed.
That anule log is a real help. It even tells you if the files corrupt.
Two points :
1 - The log keeps telling me to change the TCP port 4662 to a different number
2 - I have a 10 MB link , so in Bandwidth I have 1000 kb/s down and 80 to 100 kb/s up.
I divided these by 8 giving me 128 kB/s down and 13 kB/s up topps. Are the figures correct ?
My line capacities be on the link I have ?
Many thanks. :)
See you all tomorrow.
-
Why does a "10MB" link have 1000kbit/s down? Shouldn't it be 10000 kbit/s ?
-
There, that`s my point. When I download a torrent the top wack is 1000 kb/s . I am confused .
The damn thing works that `s all I can say. I just can not figure out what to put in those speed link boxes.
I could max out better the seed but I guess I`ll live with what I`ve got .
Thanks again for all your help.
