Well, overnet will be an open protocol when it comes to the 1.0 version (looong time from now I guess, since overnet developers seem to like the idea of not having competition :-///)
Any way, overnet is exactly the same as Kademlia (except that Kademlia is a completly open protocol), so preference is Kademlia, no real need to import overnet atm.
Greetings!

Will Kademlia work with existing edonkey network in the same way that overnet does ?
What is the dev. status ?

Yes it will. In fact, it does already in eMule ;-)
Kademlia development status is on work. Works fine but lowid users still can't connect and *Mule devs are working on improving (even more) the whole protocol.
Kademlia support in aMule is work in progress and will be as soon as possible. Probably not very far from now, but atm unicode and wx 2.5 support is first priority.
Greetings!
