First, make sure you have a high id. You can check that in Servers->My Info.

Then, make sure your upload is not too high. Leave it at least 6 kB/s under your line limit. For example, I have ADSL 256/128, which means I have about 12.8 kB/s upload link. My upload setting is 7 kB/s, that way I can still browse the web while running aMule. If you set your upload speed too high, it will hurt your download, a good explanation is here:
http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ_network

Also, notice that it takes some time to advance in the other users queues. Using aMule is somewhat like fishing, you have to be patient in the begining. As time goes by and you start uploading, you gain credits and this makes it easier to download.

Another thing that helps is using a recent CVS tarball, many many bugs have been fixed since rc8, this is really recommended. You can get one here:
http://www.hirnriss.net/?area=cvs

So, make sure your settings are ok and have some patience. Try to understand the reason of the slowliness, most probably you want files that are not so easy to get and you are way behind on users queues. So just leave aMule there and in a few hours it will start downloading fast.

Cheers!
