Title: help! for the rookie!
Post by: chupacabras on October 16, 2005, 03:50:28 PM
Hello,

New guy here, just tried to download amule 2.0.3, and can't get it to work....  When I double-click on the icon I get a message that says "can't open application "amule" becaused it is damaged or incomplete."

I deleted the first download, and tried downloading from a different place......same message.
 ?( ?(

Not sure what I'm doing wrong....any help troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated...Especially since wiki (help) server seems to be down....

Thnks in advance.

There's not a lot of information to go on.  First, is anything significant written to the console.log when you try to run aMule?  You can use /Applications/Utilities/Console.app to view the console.log.

Is there a chance that you have a very old version of StuffIt Expander on your system?  In other words, what program is unzipping the downloaded aMule zip file?  I think that old versions of StuffIt Expander don't work properly with application bundles.  You can try this: delete the aMule application, control-click (or right-click) on the downloaded .zip file and choose Open With -> BOMArchiveHelper.  That unzips the archive with Mac OS X's built-in unzip utility instead of StuffIt Expander.  Then, try the resulting aMule application.

Weird, somebody posted a similar problem in the german forum yesterday (link (http://forum.amule.org/thread.php?threadid=7694)). That person claims that the "Contents/MacOS" folder only contains the ed2k helper script but not the other binaries.

Then there is also this guy (http://forum.amule.org/thread.php?threadid=7674), who claims that he can only start amule trough the terminal but not via double-click in the Finder.

My fist suspicion was that somebody accidentally messed with the 2.0.3 binaries, but they seem to be fine.

chupacabras:
In addition to what ken has said, you can also try to start aMule through the terminal and see whether that works.
Here are some instructions (* shamelessly recycling a post for the second time *):

  • First, download the official 2.0.3 release for the Mac (see here (http://www.amule.org/files/details.php?file=126)), unzip it and put it in your Applications folder.
  • Then we need a Terminal window, so open Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.
  • Now, drag the aMule application icon from the Applications folder and drop it onto the terminal window. Terminal will paste the path to the application onto the command line for you. It will also add a space after the path.
  • Delete the space at the end of the path.
  • Add "/Contents/MacOS/amule" to the end of the path and press return.
  • aMule should now start and generate some output in the Terminal window.
  • If aMule crashes, copy the last 4 or 5 lines of this output and post it here on the forum. This will gives us a much clearer idea at which point aMule fails on your machine.

Hey, is it possible that you accidentally downloaded the "aMule-2.0.3.zip" file with the amule source code instead of the "aMule-Mac-2.0.3.zip" file with the ready-to-use Mac binary? Because that's exactly what this user (http://forum.amule.org/thread.php?threadid=7726&sid=) did who seems to have the same problem as you... ;)

sure enough......that's exactly what I did....TWICE!!!  I've since downloaded the MAC version, and everything is running smooth 8) !!! I was directed to aMule, because eMule doesn't support mac's....Hence I assumed (and it's obvious what happened when I did that) that this site was mainly for mac user's....maybe the server could make it easier or more obvious(not that it's not already obvious) for the incompetent like myself!!

Thank You very much for the help and responses !!!

Sure am glad I don't need to do all that stuff with terminal!!!!!

Thanks again,

Chupa
