Title: WRT54G progressively slows with aMule
Post by: epitome on January 09, 2006, 11:33:26 PM
aMule works fine with my WRT54G for a certain period of time - I can browse the internet without congestion - but after a few hours, the router appears to get bogged down. Hostnames won't resolve, pinging external address shows a majority of lost packets, I get booted off AIM, although aMule continues to transfer at normal rates. I do a hard boot on the router and things return to normal for another period of time.

Has anyone else had trouble with the WRT54G and degrading connection quality? Has anyone used a third party firmware and noticed good results with aMule? I tinkered around with the WRT54G's QoS, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Below are my specs:

WRT54G v2
Firmware Version : v4.20.7

Cable 4000kbps/300kbps

aMule:
Download limit: 100kb
Upload limit: 10kb
Max sources: 100
Max connections: 50
Max new connections: 5
Upload queue: 500

I use dd-wrt .23 without problems.

About your prefs:
Your download-limit ought to be 500kbyte/s (4000kbit/s / 8), no reason to limit this.
You should increase your upload to about 32kbyte/s to get more credits (and as a result a higher possibility of a download)
The max. connections are way to low, set 'em to about 400, unless you like the flat line in statistic and the problems with download.
I'ld recommend to set the  max new cons / 5sec to about 25.
The upload queue should be increased as well (~3000 should be OK), it won't kill your sys, but you may 'loose' valuable sources, cause they uploaded to you, the got credits, but as long as you don't upload to 'em, it's not very possible to get more chunks by 'em.

Try disconnecting from kad, some routers do not handle too much UDP traffic well. And do not put the settings as wuischke said, try first with no kad. If it works fine, then raise your settings somewhere around what wuischke said. The queue can be safely increased to about 5000 tho.

Regards.

At least for me KAD-Only works really fine, having the same router (rev. 3.1) thus I guess the problem gotta be somewhere else.

I've had Kad disabled. I will try disabling UDP for aMule, then I'll probably try dd-WRT. If the congestion doesn't clear up, should I really increase my settings like wuischke recommended? I was a little surprised by that recommendation.

Thanks for the help guys.

Hello, I'm using aMule and eMule behind a WRT54GS with firmware  Alchemy-V1.0 , and I don't have your problems so I don't thinjk it's a limit from the router. I agree with other you mainly need to upgfrade your upload limit. The settings suggested by wuischke sound pretty nice.

For other users with a similar problem:

Upgrading my WRT54G v2 firmware to Alchemy-V1.0 fixed the congestion.
