Title: Amule 2.1.1 makes router go insane
Post by: GuntherDW on April 17, 2006, 01:51:05 AM
i'm using a Topcom Skyracer WBR 254g, which works perfectly (i've set up the port forwarding correctly).

but whenever i start up amule, it seems to 'reset' up to 100 time per hour.
it's not a full reset, it just 'disables' every connection, either wired or wireless, forcing everyone to reconnect to the router.

Is this a know problem or is it just me?

If u need any info, just ask :)

on a side note : altough i setup the ports correctly, when i start amule kad claims it's firewalled, and i have a 75% chance of a full connection if the connection holds it for over 15 mins.

edit : i found out that when i run emule with wine, i get exactly the same problems as when i run amule...
is the cause of all this the KAD protocol?

Basically the cause is a crappy router ;) There are some models that can't handle Kad, disable it on amule preferences and try again. If that doesn't help: Get a new router...

One thing you can do is lowering the "max. connections" and "max connections per 5 sec" until your router stays stable.

the 2nd line from thedudes post is for routers really importand,

I had an smc which crashed after 2-3h becuase those values were to high. basically you can get amule to work with every router just lower those values.

it's not the max connection thing that makes the router go instane, it's the kademlia part, is it's connection limit set by that config as well?

hmm, lowering the max connections etc did it, kad is now working correctly & i don't have those annoying router resets any more
thanks :)

A while back I did some research about the Linksys WRT54GS and decided to buy it as my old crappy router died, so I think it should be ok (If I remember correctly I read about several people with no problems). However somebody gave me another router for free, so I never put that research to actual use ^^

I can tell you I have had a Linksys WRT54GS for te last hsix months. my daughter uses emule on Windows, I use what you know, and no trouble until now :) (Using the alchemy firmware).

Certainly better than my old Netgear DG834. I needed to reset it every two days, using the same config on a better adsl line.

As for now, my ADSL line gives me :

NeufBox (9online)
True capacity (controlled) : 7968Kbps down, 800Kbps up

Amule :
Limits up : 36KBps Slots : 12KBps
40 new connections/s
File Buffer : 1 MB
Queue : 2000 clients

Average results (These Settings have been here for 6 months) : 34KBps up, 130KBps down

My daughter still has kept default settings on emule, she is running on WiFi.

And we have no trouble than the usual slow web traffic on WE.
Just to tell you it's a very nice router.
More, the firmware source is open, and a lot of people have added their own tweakings for it (it's a mini-linux kernel). Just do a Google search.

It's used by City administrations too to provide urban wifi accesses (Lille, Grenoble in France).
More expensive than the average routers, but worth the cost IMHO.
Didn't try the "through-the-window" crash test anyway (No reason until now :P)
