amule won't connect
« on: November 17, 2006, 12:53:23 PM »

hi, my friend has  a Mac, so I suggested she uses aMule (I use eMule), but after installing aMule won't connect.

I tested her TCP port and is open, and she lives in my same block so if eMule works for me, aMule should work for her.
I also updated her servers list.
It says "trying to connect" and then "connection lost" and starts again.

any idea?

Maybe her ISp messes with P2P traffic and is not allowing aMule to connect? have you tried different port numbers?

Regards.

Someone in this thread suggested that turning off "Automatically check for new versions at startup" in amule Preferences->General could help in this situation.

In general, I think one reason why you would get this message is when aMule is occupied with doing something else like auto-updating ipfilter.dat at startup or hashing new shared files. So make sure that none of these things apply to you.

Good luck. :)

thanks for the suggestions. I think there must be something wrong with our IP or her Mac, as she tried other filesharing programs and none work.

our IP is the University so they might have started blocking ports. she said previously aqlite was working then stopped. maybe my emule is working because it's on different ports and I also have obfuscation enable.

now forgive my ignorance but if I give her my port numbers, could they see her traffic and close those ones too?

Actually, I think that's exactly the reason. It sounds like your university is trying to block p2p traffic so they probably also use some kind of packet analyzer. You using protocol obfuscation with your emule renders this filtering useless. But since aMule does not support protocol obfuscation yet, the aMule traffic of your friend is filtered.

You could try just any random ports (> 1024), you don't need to give her your exact port numbers. If they only block based on port numbers, then switching ports should fix the problem for your friend. However, as I wrote above, it's probably more likely that they use a packet analyzer to filter traffic and then it does not matter which ports you use.
