AntiVirus...
« on: April 21, 2004, 05:35:43 PM »

Hi... Can anyone tell me where to find an antivirus for linux? Something that runs in real time like norton for windows... I heard that Vexira is a good solution but it runs only on boot to scan entire pc...
Also, I'd like to know how to make defrag and scandisk on my disks through linux...
I have Suse 9.0
Thanks...

wehat do you need realtime scanning for? this ist just waste of cpu time.

for mailscanning you may google for amavis and antivir (should be included with suse 9.0)

well...defrag and scandisk... of your windows disks? because you don't need defrag and scandisk with most filesystems used under linux.

if a filesystem under linux is damaged you can use fsck. mostly. But if you run SuSE 9.0 you should have reiserfs installed and this should keep trouble away from you ;)

Maybe you should check Kasperski Antivirus for linux server.
Not really fun to use, but reliable.
Modern *nix/linux Filesystems normally don't mess up like FAT. Normal users don't have to care about such things - most times the system gets reinstalled on a cleaned partition before problems like fragmentation occur.
Check the docs on ext3fs/reiserfs and possibly xfs (imho xfs is clearly the fs of choice).

The reason I want to install antivirus in real time for linux is because I'm making dowloads from internet to a win partition and every now and then I need to use windows. If a virus comes with a file and if I open it with windows... And I usualy copy files to CD and borrow them to my friends. They don't use linux...

well if you download it under linux to a win partition under linux... where is the reason to have a realtime scanner for open it with windows?

If you restart your system to windows und you have a realtimescanner there this should be enough...right?

Maybe because he wants to send those files directly from linux, not from windows. I can say it's a pain to restart into windows ;-)
Also, this is not quite the right place to talk abou this :-( This forum's purpose is to help aMule users on Linux.

Anyway, AFAIK, all good antivirus for Linux are commercial. Check Tucows if you're realy interested in this issue. On the other hand... why don't your Win-friends use an antivirus if THEY're the ones who really suffer the damage? :-D

Greetings
