well, you should get rid of all your wxgtk and wxbase packages and compile wxgtk-2.6.0 yourself..

such mix like you have there isn't good at all

cheers

Hi Atilla,

Your wxgtk and wxbase packages are not the problem here - not that you
probably shouldn't recompile them anyway...

There is a line missing in the file ExternalConn.cpp

aMule-cvs from the last two nights has had this problem.

 insert the following line at line 58

#include "gsocket-fix.h"   // Needed for wxSOCKET_REUSEADDR

and the compilation error you are having will disappear.

yes, you need to add the line for wx*-2.4.2. it's not needed for 2.6.0 i.e

the thing is .. why still use 2.4.2 when we have nice and stable wxWidgets-2.6.0 ? once aMule supports kademlia you will have to update to 2.6.x anyway ;)

cheers

Thanks guys,
I ripped out all earlier versions of wxgtk and wxbase as Delta suggested. I then compiled version 2.6 of wxgtk with no problems. Amule then compiled w/o complaining and I tried running it and got this:
./amule: error while loading shared libraries: libwx_gtk2_xrc-2.6.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I then searched the forum archives for a similar problem,  :)) and saw that I should also compile/install wxbase 2.6 as well. So I did that and tried compiling and KAPOW. Doing make created 2 billion error messages and exited very unhappy.  X( So then I thought, aha maybe I should recompile wxgtk since now there was a wxbase (all are version 2.6 taken from wxWidgets site). I did that then recompiled amule and there is good news  :D and bad news  X( . The good news: it compiled. The bad news, the same error message as above. I probably need a symlink to libwx_gtk2_xrc-2.6.so.0 since it's located happily in /usr/local/lib/libwx_gtk2_xrc-2.6.so.0
Can you tell me where amule is looking for it? BTW, it didn't complain about the wxSOCKET_REUSEADDR. As I said, amule compiled ok and created the amule and ed2k executables. So this is another mystery. If my original problem had nothing to do with 2.5.3 vs 2.6, then why did that error disappear? Anyway my main concern is telling amule where to find the 2.6 library.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Jonathan

sorry, I just saw Delta's comment about not needing that line in 2.6 that Obsessional mentioned.
so now just the lib problem remains.

You need to add /usr/local/lib to your /etc/ld.so.conf or whatever is called on your distro. Or, you can configure wxGTK2.6 with --prefix=/usr ;)

ld.so.conf
« Reply #8 on: May 16, 2005, 04:06:36 PM »

Thanks for that Kry,
I did add the /usr/local/lib to the ld.so.conf file but I wasn't sure what I needed to do for it to take effect. Doing that and then trying to run ./amule (at least from /tmp/amule-cvs/src) still gave the same error message. As a stopgap measure I symlinked the 8 lib files that amule wanted to /usr/lib and that satisfied amule and it's running now. It looks nicer on the bottom tool try when minimised and the fonts have changed. Those are the visible differences, all for the better. Getting ld.so.conf to work is a better long-term solution. I'll google around and see what I can dig up. If you can give me a hint that would be nice. ;-) .
Thanks to all of you for your help and if you're not tired of hearing it, you do a great job.

ldconfig
« Reply #9 on: May 16, 2005, 04:13:20 PM »

Ok, I needed to run ldconfig again. I haven't restarted amule again but that looks like the sensible answer. Google IS your friend.

As a result of this thread I decided to update to wxGTK-2.6.0
since it is needed for Kademlia...

It can be installed side by side with the earlier version (2.4.2 in my case)
under Gentoo, which is what I did, as I was unsure if programs compiled against
2.4.2 would be happy with the later version which appears to have split into 7
separate libraries.

When installed they appear not to tread on each others toes.
All my builds against 2.4.2 still run.

An ldconfig as noted in Attila's post is needed for the new libraries to be found after updating.

The line I use to configure the aMule CVS compile for wxGTK-2.4.2 under Gentoo is:

 ./configure  --prefix=/usr --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --with-wx-config=/usr/bin/wxgtk-2.4-config --with-wxbase-config=/usr/bin/wxgtk-2.4-config --enable-verbose --enable-nls --disable-amulecmd --disable-amulecmdgui --disable-webserver --disable-webservergui --enable-cas --enable-wxcas --disable-alc --disable-alcc --disable-debug --enable-optimise

and for wxGTK-2.6.0 the line became:

 ./configure  --prefix=/usr --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --with-wx-config=/usr/bin/wx-config-2.6 --enable-verbose --enable-nls --disable-amulecmd --disable-amulecmdgui --disable-webserver --disable-webservergui --enable-cas --enable-wxcas --disable-alc --disable-alcc --disable-debug --enable-optimise

I deleted the un-needed wxbase reference and pointed the wx-config reference at the wxGTK-2.6 config
(in /usr/bin on my Gentoo machine - others location may vary)

With the above amended ./configure aMule compiled and ran perfectly under wxGTK-2.6.0
without the extra line I had to add to ExternalConn.cpp for aMule-CVS-20050516 to compile
with wxGTK-2.4.2

The above lot could be usefull for anyone trying/contemplating the same transition.

So now I'm all set up for Kademlia, any idea how far off the completion of the Kademlia addition is?
I have spotted the ongoing addition of code.....

That's great news, Al. I've done things backwards. I ripped out all earlier wxbase wxgtk and then compiled wxbase & wxgtk 2.6 and then compiled amule (in my defense I was following instructions). The result is that I have a smoothly running and good looking amule. But this is at the expense of 2 programs that I like/use: Audacity & vlc . I tried compiling both from source but they really do need wxgtk2.4. (vlc has been talking about updating its code to work with later versions but who knows when). Anyway, it's reassuring that 2.6 and 2.4 can live together. Do you think I can now reinstall libwxgtk2.4 (no need for wxbase2.4 AFAIK) without messing up 2.6?
Once again, thanks for your post. It is really helpful.

Hum... it's on it's way, but will take still some time, can't say how much, because it depends on my work, the amount of times I get drunk with my friends, the time my girlfriend is arounds, blalablabla. PlayStation 2 also has a big role on it :P

Long story short: soon.

Hi Attila,

>>Do you think I can now reinstall libwxgtk2.4 (no need for wxbase2.4 AFAIK)
>>without messing up 2.6?

Under Gentoo the ebuild flags itself with an "S" to show it will install side-by-side.

I just had a look at my /usr/lib directory and between libwxgtk2.4 & 2.6 and wxbase
including the .so and .so.0 links  there are 123 library files!!

an "ldd /fullpathto/amule" of aMule compiled against 2.4 lists only one of these:
         libwx_gtk-2.4.so => /usr/lib/libwx_gtk-2.4.so

while the same on amule compiled against 2.6 lists 7 wx libraries.

   libwx_gtk2_xrc-2.6.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwx_gtk2_xrc-2.6.so.0 (0x40089000)
   libwx_gtk2_html-2.6.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwx_gtk2_html-2.6.so.0 (0x40100000)
   libwx_gtk2_adv-2.6.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwx_gtk2_adv-2.6.so.0 (0x4018c000)
   libwx_gtk2_core-2.6.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwx_gtk2_core-2.6.so.0 (0x40232000)
   libwx_base_xml-2.6.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwx_base_xml-2.6.so.0 (0x40580000)
   libwx_base_net-2.6.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwx_base_net-2.6.so.0 (0x4058c000)
   libwx_base-2.6.so.0 => /usr/lib/libwx_base-2.6.so.0 (0x405b7000)

I did not install libwx_base-2.6 so it must be a default part of the 2.6 package
There appear to be no name conflicts under Gentoo.

An "ldd /fullpathto/amule" of any build you have against 2.4 should show if the library
names it is looking for conflict with those of your 2.6 build.

The two source files I used for wxGTK2.6.0 were:
wxWidgets-2.6.0.tar.bz2
wxWidgets-2.6.0-HTML.tar.gz

This is an outtake from the Gentoo ebuild file for wxGTK-2.6.0-r1

   einfo "IMPORTANT: If you are upgrading from wxGTK-2.6.0 to"
   einfo "wxGTK-2.6.0-r1 you will need to recomplie applications"
   einfo "linked to it. >=dev-db/pgadmin3-1.2.0 is one and any"
   einfo "other non-portage wxGTK apps you may have installed also."
   einfo "This is necessary due to changing the way wxGTK is built"
   einfo "with multilibs instead of a monolithic build."
   einfo "Also note dev-libs/wxbase has been removed from portage"
   einfo "and can be installed with wxGTK by specifying the USE flags"
   einfo "-gtk2 and -wxgtk1"

So it looks like those testing the builds have decided not to build a monolithic library.
Whichever way you did it I doubt that the library names will conflict and the include
files are in separate subdirectories.

If you reinstall wxgtk2.4 the only problem I would forsee would be with any ./configure
script which chose the wrong version - something which should be obvious at the time
so long as you looked for it.

In the worst case an uninstall of both followed by a reinstall of 2.6 should restore the
current setup anyway.

Hope that helps.

Yes ObsA,
You're quite right. I reinstalled 2.4 and then audacity & vlc. Today I saw that amule 2.01 came out so I dl-ed and compiled it without even a murmur of a problem (just used ./configure - no flags). amule 2.0.1 runs normally. So now I have audacity back and vlc and amule running under 2.6.0. Brilliant!
Thanks for the hand-holding.
Cheers,
