bad U/D ratio

Hi all !

First, I'd like to thank the developers for this great programme!

I'm currently running aMule 2.0.3 under my Ubuntu Hoary system ...

My problem is that I upload a lot more data than I recieve ... For instance, my current session has been running for 8 hours, and the U/D ratio is 3:1 ...

I have a 8mbits (down) and 1mbit (up) ADSL connection, and I am indeed connected as HighID...

I'm sorry not to give more detail, but I don't know what would be relevant ... a log file maybe ?

Depending on what (and how much) you download this can be quite normal. And another factor are the credits: How long are you using amule now? Just be patient, the whole ed2k network is more about availability and not about speed...

I wasn't impatient or anything, I'm very happy with, but I just wanted to know if there was anything I should worry about.

If you have a High ID that is already "half of the rent" as we say here. One thing you might try is to change the ports your amule uses to something different just in case your ISP slows the default ports down...

Good idea ! I think I'll wait for a day or two, and if the ratio is still "bad" I'll try and change the ports!

I've changed the port numbers and the ratio is still very bad (~5:1 after 6 days !)...

If your files are not very popular, you might find this behavior. How many sources have you found? about 2500 - 3000 should give good download values.

I get about 300 sources per file ... But I'm downloading many files at the same time (8 right now) ... Is it a good thing or not ?

If you are using most of your upload bandwidth (~120k/s) for amule part of your low d/u-ratio might simply be an expression of "regression towards the mean". The average upload rate in the ed2k network is probably around 30k/s (just taking a wild guess here). Since you can only download what other people upload, your download rates will regress toward that mean. Note, because of the credit system, you should still get better download rates on average than somebody uploading at 'only' 40k/s, but they won't be three times better.

That said, a d/u-ratio of 1:6 is a bit low if you are not only downloading rare files. Are you maybe just downloading a small number of files (say 5 or so)?

I see what you mean ... I don't mind uploading more than downloading at all : I am lucky enough to have a high upstream bandwith, so I'm very happy to give it away to other people ... But my download rate is VERY low ...

I've tried downloading many files at the same time (ie : 15 or so) and things get better, but it's still not fantastic...
