Find user
« on: November 22, 2005, 12:55:40 PM »

Hi, it would be great if you are able to find out, on which server an user is connected.
I have a file, which is very rare and only one user has it complete. Before I am able to get the missing part, the user switches to another server (queue is to long). If he login to another server than mine, I don't know on which one. Sometimes I get the same server and then I am again in his queue. So it  would be a good feature.

I think emule servers dont support this kind of searches, witch means this is a feature that cant be implemented.

If you add him as a friend and aMule is able to locate him, you can see the server he is connected to by doing "Show Details" on his name in the friends list.

However, if amule was able to locate him I'm not sure if it also asked him about his files already. If that was the case this whole thing would be pointless since you would only know his server if you've already queried him for sources anyway.

If he changes server, you don't lose him as source.

I agree that this would be useful...

I am not sure if the server of emule supports this feature. But I believe this is doable(don't quote me, I am not an expert). The "show details" for "friends" doesn't usually work because most of the time, emule doesn't automatically try to locate your "friends", even if they are online. But if you are somehow able to know the server he is on, you can connect to him through "server connection" by being on that server yourself.

I have tried "adding sources" by enabling "advanced control" and entering user ip and port, this sometimes work but most of the time it doesn't. Connection through server is the best.

Another idea is to locate a user using the user hash. I wonder if this is possible. But if every user has a unique hash, why is this not possible? Why do we have to know the user ip and port? Plus, I know of a user who changes his ip everytime he comes online( the reason i know this is the same person is because his Funnynick is always the same in MorphXT and he is also one of the few people (<3) who is the complete source of the rare file I want. He frequents the same server, has the same port (5555)but always has different ip). Using user hash to locate someone would be  best.

There is no way to find a user hash.

Sorry, my mistake. Then, what is the hash value when you right click on a friend and select details (at the messages tab)? Can we find a user using that hash value?

Taht's the user hash. No, we can't find a user with the user hash. We need ip and port.

I see. But, would such a feature be possible to implement? It would be very useful because the ip of a user can change all the time as I've said earlier, but the user hash will stay the same always (that's how MorphXT is able to give a funny nick to every user, even if the ip address changes all the time.)

And in my experience, adding a source (user) using ip and port is not that reliable. Direct server connection is better. Why is that?

Another question... What is used to determine the user hash if the ip address is not part of the formula?
