ports forwarded but horribly slow!!
« on: October 02, 2006, 12:41:15 AM »

Hi!

My ports are forwarded, my two arrows are green... but download is horribly slow. I can't download files at a speed higher than just 3 or 4 kbps!! I have ADSL 1 Mb provided by Telefonica (Spain). I' ve tested my line speed: 789 kbps on downloads and 110 kbps on uploads. I think my connection preferences are wrong configurated. What values do I have to write in bandwith limits, line capacities and in slot allocation? What values in max sources per file and in max connections? My ports are 4662 and 4672. I have amule 2.1.2 and  my limits and capacities are 100/10, slot allocation is 2, max sources and max connections are 1000 (I've changed them so many times...). Can you help me? I've asked for help in the Spanish forum but no one answered. Sorry for my English. I hope everybody can understand the post.

Thanks!

Hi Begoña!

Don't worry about your English, it's perfectly understandable.

There's a topic in the wiki about this: English / Spanish
You'll find a lots of useful tipps there.

I suggest to lower the values for max. sources for a file (hard limit) and max. connections to the default values again, there's the risk of 'overstraining'. (e.g. Routers will freeze/restart) Your bandwith limits seem fine to me as well.
Slot allocation will influence the aimed upload speed to each client and therefore the number of uploads. 10KB Upload total/2KB Upload per client =5 upload slots. Seems well too.

Your problems are probably the points 2-4 in the "network's fault"-section of the wiki page. Choose popular files in favor of impopular ones and wait. The longer aMule's running, the better for your speed. The best case is 24hours daily, 7days a week.

Hope I could help you a bit.

Thanks wuischke!

I' ve lowered the values you indicated me and now amule is downloading much faster!! Don't know if at full speed but I will wait, as you say.

Thanks again for your help

Hola Bego.

What values do I have to write in bandwith limits, line capacities and in slot allocation?
I would put the maximum you've got. For example, you could try 100kB/s for Download, and 10kB/s for Upload limits, and 30kB/s for Slot Allocation.

What values in max sources per file and in max connections?
300 and 500 is OK.

My ports are 4662 and 4672.
I would definitely change that. Choose any port you like, but not those. For example: TCP-9093 and UDP-9196. Be careful that you change the settings of your router so as to admit NAT port forwarding for those ports... INCLUDING UDP-9096 (TCP+3)

100/10 is Ok. Slot allocation better at 30. Max sources and max connections not greater than 500. (IMHO)

Tu ingles es perfecto.
Chao, Bego. Buena suerte. Si tienes algún problema, vuelve a "postear".

Salut.

30kB/s for Slot Allocation.
Sorry, this won't work. The slot allocation is the aimed upload speed for each slot. This can't logically be higher than the total upload speed. aMule will always open at least two upload slots and therefore it will treat too high settings like a slot allocation of 5kB/s resulting in two upload slots.

Usually it works like that: total upload speed / desired number of slots = slot allocation

In my case: 40kB/s upload speed / 5 slots = 8kB/s slot allocation

¿De acuerdo?

Thanks for your interest!

I have my slot allocation in 5, as you told me at first, wuischke, and downloading works fine. Thanks to you both for your help, anyway. It's great to have someone somewhere out there who knows about this technical stuff.
