plurals support
« on: February 25, 2006, 01:29:32 AM »

I will explain a problem of plurals in brief. In English there is only one plural form:
files (any number of files more than 1)
This is very simple approach. Many other languages I know have more difficult approach.

failas (for 21, 31, 41, 51, ..., 101, 1001,... files)
failai (for 2 to 9, for 22-29, 32-39,... files)
failų (for 10, 20, 30, 40,.. 100,... files and for 11 to 19 files)

All above words are different three plural forms of Lithuanian language. Similar approach to plurals is in russian, polish languages. Some languages has even four plural forms.

Plurals in amule are still not supported. It means that plural words cannot be translated correctly into many languages. It would be greate to have plurals support in amule!

hum?

it just depends on the translaters on how they translate each string...

You didn't get the point. The line
Found %n known shared files.
is the only possible plural in English, but it can be translated to Lithuanian three different ways (and even four ways to Slovenian). Which way should translator choose? Correct translation depends on the value of n.

stefanero, I think he's talking about this:

http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_chapter/gettext_10.html#SEC150

Looks like .po authors alone cannot do this as it requires source code changes.

At first you must add "plurals" description for your language in header of your .po files :)
And as i remember there was another thing in translation string, like adding another translation.
Just check out gettext docs - http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/

Plural forms support has been added to aMule.

Translators: you must mark your translations with the appropriate Plural-Forms tag. See http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/manual/html_chapter/gettext_10.html#Plural-forms for more information, or type "info '(gettext)Plural forms'".

Comments and suggestions are welcome.
