is there a way i can get amule directly from cvs? i'd rather not use tarballs..

Not at the moment, sorry.
But tarbals are released nightly and commonly there's not much difference between the real latest release and the tarballs, so just grab the latest nightl tarball and you're there. Tarballs are never stripped from any piece of code, so they are almost the latest ;-)
