"first and last chunks" improvements
« on: April 09, 2005, 03:03:49 PM »

i'm talking about the option that allows to download the first and last chunks bufore other parts.
i noticed that amule gives the same value to both parts but i think first chunk shuold be downloaded first, since the preview is possible without last bytes but not without the first ones. if there are only one or two sources for a file and you are not sure about what that file is, you'll find this improvement really important.
moreover, i think enabling "first and last chunks" feature ("classic" or "improved") for all files makes no sense coz i can doubt for a file that every user has named in a totally different way (or in a "non-informative" way) but i'm pretty sure about other downloads. so it would be nice if the feature could be enabled file by file or enabled globally and disabled file by file.

thanx for the attention and patience

bye ;)

ps: yes, i usually download (and upload) rare files :)

Curious. I always felt like the first chunk really had a high priority, while the last one often came last or almost. This seems to have changed with CVS, but don't take my words as valuable statistics.

I hope it's really being solved in CVS, because ZIP files can be unzipped partially if you have the last chunk, where all the info is. Well, at least in eMule I saw that it really gave priority to the first and last chunks.

You can also just do this:
zip -qFF
then you can unpack it.
But you need to do it to a copy of the part file, since it makes changes to the archive.

ok... something can be done for zip files.
having only last bytes, i noticed that preview is possible for (some?) video files too, using mplayer (even if right-clicking on the file in amule the preview si not enebled). ok, but you have to admit that last chuncks is less than 9.28 MB and sometimes even only some KB!!! so (again) i think first chunk should be downloaded before last chunk.
anyway, please take a look at the second part of my feature request (about not globally enabling the feature) ;)

thanx
