Sync with eMule 0.30b
« on: October 10, 2003, 09:05:10 AM »

This fork is welcome ! xmule seems to be dead. xmule 2 seems dead before being usable...
Maybe we can continue to have a eMule-based program for Linux...

By the way, do you plan to sync with the current eMule code base (v30b). aMule is currently a fork of v26d. Some things have been back-ported to xmule (such as queue dropping). But lots of things have not (such as the new compressed dialog between server and client). Currenlty all the development of the donkey network s done on eMule. If we don't follow the new features, we will soon have an outdated not working program. For example, will the new server-less network based on Kademlia be implemented on aMule ?

I think the aMule code begins to be very different from original eMule and it should be very difficult to back-port everything... I don't blame anyone for that (especially not BigBob) but this is quite annoying as this will soon let us with the same situation as before the lmule fork : not correct implementation of the new important features...

What makes you think xMule2 is dead? The fact that we haven't released anything in a while doesn't mean we'r dead. Quite the opposite - bothie has just reached a milestone in core development.
[code:1]
Oct 28 10:20:42 I've hit a milestone yesterday: ParseClass seems to work stable now.
Oct 28 10:20:47 Great :)
Oct 28 10:20:59 You should make some announcement then :)
Oct 28 10:21:10 Valgrind didn't show up any errors anymore.
Oct 28 10:21:35 Now the only thing is to interpret incomping packets, and build outgoing packets in a different way.
Oct 28 10:21:55 And than, last but not least, files should be actually written ;-)
Oct 28 10:22:00 :)
Oct 28 10:22:02 Nice.
Oct 28 10:22:12 So, what, a month till uploading/dloading works ?
Oct 28 10:22:23 When that works, we have our first ALPHA version..
Oct 28 10:22:45 Maybe, but we should keep on our official x-mas deadline.
Oct 28 10:22:50 Yeah.
[/code:1]
We sure did have a little slowdown, because school started for the majority of developers, and I also took a break from developing (had been deving LMule/xMule 24/7 for almost 6 months, REALLY needed the break), but now I'm more-less back with lotsa new ideas. So don't just rule us out yet :)

good to know, madcat, that you guys continue your work. Although it's a fact that if someone needs a *working* edonkey client on linux NOW, amule is the way to go isnt it?

Yes, of course, you guys didnt *want* to have a working edonkey within hours by forking from xmule, instead you guys wanted to build one from scratch - thats very good, me not critical ;)

mldonkey isnt that good, imho - it'd be very good if there whould be an alternative. and, afaik, you guys are coding one isnt it? hope it turns out very nice...

back to eMule compatibility

I must agree with one of the last posts: merging at least some of the changes back into eMule or performing work there to make sure that at the network layer is portable seems to be the only way to ensure that aMule will survive the evolution of P2P clients and technologies... Are there any contacts between eMule and aMule developers?
