I get the same problem on my gentoo ~amd64 system. I applied the patch in the first post using portage on wxGTK-2.8.11.0.

Amule is working fine now.

Hi, I'am having crashes (bad alloc) too.
I run aMule 2.2.6 using wxGTK2 v2.8.10 OS ubuntu 10.04, I've added this repo: http://apt.wxwidgets.org/lucid-wx in order to have the latest wxwidgets 2.8.12.1-0, what do I have to do now? Install new wxwidgets, uninstall amule, and...

No idea about that repo. In theory replacing the wx libs should be enough. But Ubuntu still has no 2.8.12, not even in 11.10 last time I checked.
 
I would compile wx and aMule myself as described in the wiki. And you can also try the 2.3.1.rc2 while you're at it.  :)
