aMule not responding in Preferences
« on: January 11, 2007, 01:54:22 PM »

I've downloaded and successfully installed/configured aMule.
Great job! Works a treat!

One problem: when I go into the configuration section, the application does
not respond for a LONG time, i.e. minutes. When it finally returns, all is
seemingly well, but the CPU usage (Activity Monitor) has gone off the dial
and top shows a load avg of 3.2, and the machine is doing little else but aMule.

Load avg then settles, CPU use returns to normal.

When I then attempt to change the shared directories by clicking on the
directory tree starting at root /, same thing happens. I eventually have to
"Force Quit" and start 'er up again :(

I suspect this problem has something to do with aMule traversing all the
directory paths on my machine. I do have some encrypted Volumes mounted,
which could explain the high CPU usage.

If anyone else has experienced this behaviour (hangs for quite a while) let me
know.

Ah ha ... I have unmounted all the encrypted volumes and now the configuration -
preferences section pops up immediately. But it does beg the question of what
aMule is doing when there are lots and lots of files mounted through several
mounted disks (about 0.6 TB)

But one problem remains.

In the directories section, I have clicked on the root / to open it.
Now I have right-clicked to recursively share, and the app has
gone away again. After 5 minutes and heaps of CPU (100%) I have
had to "Force Quit" and start once again.

I find that the method of showing the entire file system from the root
very confusing and dangerous, as mentioned elsewhere in this forum.

Might I suggest that a safer interface for sharing directories is as is done
for Temp and Downloads: allow the user to browse and add to a list of directories.
Much safer, quicker to use and easier to understand.

thanks!

When aMule is frozen, use Activity Monitor to sample it.  In Activity Monitor, you can sample a process by choosing Sample Process from the View menu.  Save the sample report to a file and attach it to your reply.
