port 4662 not available - LOWID
« on: April 15, 2006, 06:01:12 PM »

Hi guys,

I've got an iMac G5 running OS 10.4.4.

I've just downloaded aMule 2.1.1. When I launch it, it says:
"Port 4662 no available. You will be LOWID. Check network to make sure it's open for output/input".

How can I open that port?

At the moment, my eMule is not connected (Kad:off). What should I do to be connected?

Thanks so much in advance if you can help!

No I don't have a router.

I don't know if that helps but I have cable DSL, connection through Built-In Ethernet, configuration using DHCP.

Maybe your dsl modem bas built-in router functionalities. Can you tell us the brand and model of the modem?

Do you use any kind of software firewall, eg. the one that's built into OS X? (see system preferences->sharing->firewall)

Current aMule CVS builds for OS X can be found here.

It's the DSL modem that was provided by my cable company here in Belgium. It's a Motorolla SB5100E Surfboard Cable Modem.

I've just checked and it won't let me access the firewall tab. It gives me the following message:
"Other firewall software is running on your computer. To change the Apple firewall settings, turn off the other software firewall"

That's strange, I wasn't aware I was using a software firewall. Should I turn it off? and if so, how can I do it?

There are two issues here: you apparently have a firewall running, and it's not the one that Apple built into the OS.  We can't advise you on how to disable it because we don't know what it is or where it came from.

The other thing is that the message you're seeing "Port 4662 not available." isn't related to your firewall.  It means that there's some other program that's already using port 4662.  Any given port can only be used by one program at a time.  Perhaps another user is running aMule on your computer?  Or, maybe it's a different program.  Either way, the solution is to go into aMule's preferences and change the port number it's using for TCP.  Pick any number between 1025 and 65532.

OK... that's weird cause as far as I know I've never installed any firewall.

I've followed your advice and changed the port to a different number. Now the error message has disappeared :) and that's one good thing! But I still can't connect, it says at the bottom of the main screen "Error: Cannot get the official hostname (error 22: invalid argument)". Any idea what I should do?

Thanks! :)

I've just done what is suggested in the sticky thread but it still gives the same error message. I've just posted about that in the sticky.
