need some guidance with tcp/ip settings, i think
« on: December 22, 2005, 02:35:50 AM »

hello,
i'm a mac newbie and an amule newbie.
i made the jump about 2 months ago.
problem i am having is that i just got a voip adaptor today and since then amule says

"WARNING: You have recieved Low-ID!
most likely this is because you're behind a firewall or router"

so i snooped around a bit and was going through different settings i don't quite understand and just for hell of it, i tested the client tcp port, which is set at 4662, and i get the message:

"Error: TCP port 4662 is unavailable. Make sure your firewall or router is allowing/forwarding this TCP service port and your ED2K client is running (i.e. aMule, eMule).

Detailed Error Message
TCP Error 111 Connection refused

Explanation
The port is available for connections but a connection was refused meaning there is nothing listening on that port. This most likely means you can use ED2K but your client is not currently running. Try running this test again with an ED2K client running to make sure you can really establish a connection. No info available; this TCP error probably indicates a problem with the networking on your system (i.e. the TCP/IP stack)."

my bandwidth is great but my amule connection is extremly slow since i got this voip adaptor.

what should i do?

I have no idea how reliable this test is, but lets assume that it's 100% correct of matter of this discussion.

Quote
"WARNING: You have recieved Low-ID!
most likely this is because you're behind a firewall or router"

ED2K server informs you that it (server) can't communicate with your amule thru port you set in its (amule) preferences. Most likely (as error message says) that the reason is firewall or router blocking commection attempts.

The port is available for connections but a connection was refused meaning there is nothing listening on that port.
This means, that your router/firewall/whatever seems to pass connection to your computer, but there's no program listening on port 4662. If your intention was to have amule listening there, go to "Preferences" on amule and check port numbers again.

According to the website of the VoIP box vendor it is in fact a router.... And there is your problem: Instead of your computer having direct contact with your ISP, it is now talking to the VoIP box, which in turn is connected to the ISP.

So, I can't really guide you through setting up the VoIP box properly, but the general idea is to go through it's manual, and look for the entries on "port forwarding". First check the IP address that your computer has gotten now, I have no idea how to do that on a Mac though but it is probably 192.168.0.2. Then open a browser session to your VoIP box as instructed in the manual and forward 3 ports to the IP address of your computer: TCP (!!) 4662 and UDP (!!!) 4665 and 4672.

This should fix your problem.

PS: Oh, and remember, if you are unsure about your actions on the VoIP box, just don't hit "save", kill the browser, read the manual again, and some posts here on port forwarding, and just try again. Computers and routers can't die, they only can be misconfigured  :)

thanks for the info!

yet i still face couple of problems...

the manual the adaptor consists of wopping 3 pages, and to top it off, it only has instructions for windows...
but i'll try to figure it out somehow... wish me luck........

and if this thingamajiggy is a router, what kind of difficulities lie ahead for me if i decided to get a wireless router??? because i am getting one next week, would i be pulling my hair out getting all these to work???

if you are able to read the wlan-router manual probably not  :]

Well, if you are going to get a wireless router to put after your current VoIP box, you might be in for a couple of evenings and a visit to a hair salon later  :)

I would suggest to surf to the website of the VoIP box vendor, there is a guide there: http://www.sipura.com/Documents/SPA2100-Administrative_Supplement1.1.pdf. Although not really elaborate, it should give you enough to work with, especially if you do some web searching on "routing", "router", "port forwarding" and so on.

Welcome to the wonderful world of IP networking.....

ippon: sorry, but before you going to configure your router, it would be nice to understand few basic concepts first. Get yourself answer to:
1. What is router
2. What is "port" in TCP and UDP
3. What is port forwarding

Than you can start asking "right" questions

update!

thanks to those who tried to help me!

me getting a wireless router did interfere with the voip adaptor that i was using, my voip company gave me the adaptor without the router function. so i now have wifi AND voip. but using this setup led me to change the udp port settings in the router for the adaptor and while i was there, i was able to figure out the tcp/ucp setting for amule.

it was quite simple. just opened up new port forwarding and specified the ports and server ip address.
