copyright infringement email
« on: August 13, 2006, 10:50:37 PM »

Hi everyone,

I just received a disturbing email from my service provider (Telus, in Canada) warning me that an unnamed party is accusing me of copyright infringement.  It lists my IP and one of the films I've downloaded.  Threatens the right to cut me off from my service.

How is it that a third party has been able to monitor my downloads on amule?  Is there any way of protecting myself from this snooping?  As I understand it, in Canada it's perfectly legal to download; uploading's the problem.  I certainly don't want to prevent others from uploading material.  Is there anything I can do?

Thanks in advance.

Everything you download with any ED2K client is shared as well, so others can download the parts you've already downloaded from you.
These parties simply search for a movie/mp3/whatever, start downloading it and write down every IP address they find sharing that file. The only way to prevent this is to not download (or share) any copyrighted materials. If you still want to you should use the ip filter and hope that the IP addresses of this party are listed there, so they will be blocked if they try to download something from you.

Thanks for the reply.

"start downloading it and write down every IP address they"

Is there any way to block my IP address from being visible?

Are you saying that I have to prevent ANYONE from sharing with me if I'm downloading something that happens to be copyrighted?  Is there even a way of doing that?

Everything under the Sun is copyrighted.  I can't walk outside without stepping in copyright.   I have no intention of selling or even keeping the material I download; I merely need clips for some guerrilla films I'm making.   In fact, ironically, I actually owned the movie I got pegged for, just didn't want to bother going to the trouble of ripping it.

Anyway, can anyone answer the two questions I asked?   Or all we all saints here who have never downloaded anything copyrighted?   :))

Point is, we can't and won't help you avoid getting caught by your country's law. You don't download anything you can be sued for downloading, and you'll be ok.

You asked a question "can I prevent situations X,Y and Z", and have been given an answer from technical point of view: "no you can't". Now, it must be clear to you that we not can give you any legal advice for 2 very simple reasons:
* None of us is lawyer
* We live in different countries and under different laws

You seems to have claims about validity and/or fairness of current copyright laws of your country? Do we look like political party to you? If you have democracy in your country - why don't you write a letter to your parlament members? If you don't have - ask you king/queen/tribe leader/dictator/etc to to change this unfair law.

Please don't ask questions like "how can I avoid being caugh by local authorities" - it can not be answered.

P.S.
Regarding being saint. Different religions have different ideas about term "saint", and you definitely don't wanna discuss those ideas here.
I personally don't belive that being saint have anything to do with copyright laws. Meaning, you won't become saint by compying that laws, but on the other hand you won't stop being saint by breaking it.

If you want some more answers from a technical point of view.

No, there isn't. Your IP address is used for sending the file to/receiving the file from.

I'm saying that if the IP address(es) of the computers used by that party are known and listed in an ipfilter.dat you can use that ipfilter. If that's not the case the only way would be to prevent anyone from sharing, although that's not possible (well, you could use a firewall/ipfilter.dat to block a big range of ip addresses, but I wouldn't recommend that as that won't be beneficial for your download speed).

So the only reliable way to prevent it is not download/upload any copyrighted materials. Amen ;).
