Nothing downloads
« on: August 16, 2006, 06:18:59 PM »

Have downloaded Amule today on my new Mac...  I connect fine and can search for anything...  However, nothing I try to download actually starts to download...!!

With Limewire etc... at least something downoalds. It may be that Im doing something wrong or have not got my setup correct but it seems to me unusual that I have a list of 20 items ready for download in the files transfer window and nothing has even started yet.

Any suggestions?

The Gnutella network (the one that Limewire uses) works very differently than the ed2k network that aMule uses. One of the main difference is that most ed2k clients use long queues to determine who gets to download from them. So you usually have to wait a bit until your downloads start.
You can actually track your progress in other peoples queues by double-clicking one of you downloads. You will then see all the clients that are sharing that file. In the 'Priority' column you will see for each client something like "QR: 571", which means you are number 571 in line. Once that number reaches 0, your download will start from that client.

Overall, you can get pretty good download speeds from the ed2k network, but you can't just fire up your client and only run it for an hour or so.

For more details, see http://www.amule.org/wiki/index.php/AMule_is_slow.

Thanks for that... and you were right, I have eventually started.... but it is really slow compared to Limewire etc...  I am sure that it has much to do with my settings...

I have read the thread you suggested but it mostly says dont be too high or low for anything... is there anywhere I can get some realistic upload and download limits I should be putting into the preferences???... this would help a great deal. I am certainly not an expert so practicalk numbers are a great help.

I want to maximise my downloads speeds...

I have a "clean" IMac 2ghz, Intel processor with 1.5 RAM.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Forgot to add that I ahve 8meg broadband...  which is why perhaps I feel that 2.6 kB/s is a bit slow?

The most important thing about the settings, is to not saturate your internet connection. If you make sure that you assign not more than 80% of your upload bandwidth to amule, and keep the max number of connections in the 100-130 or so range, you should be fine

The number of files are you downloading and how popular those are has a tremendous effect on your download rates. If you only download, say, 5 files and there are on average only 5 sources per file, you usually will not get an average download rate of much more than 5k/s. In contrast, if you download 20 popular files (with more than 100 sources each), you should be able to get download rates in the range of 40-100k/s after a few hours.

Finally, the last two (if i remember correctly) Mac versions of aMule have a bug that limits the download speed per source to 3k/s. You can find more details here. Right now, you have two options, you can either wait a bit until we release 2.1.4 which won't be affected by that bug (rumor is that that version should come out within the next few weeks) or you can grab my most recent CVS version (see my signature), in which that bug is also fixed. The CVS version needs to be started through the Terminal, which some perceive as an inconvenience, but on the bright side, it contains a few features (e.g., support for files > 4gb, etc.) that won't be available in the stable releases until 2.2.0.
