Can't connect to servers
« on: October 07, 2006, 07:19:33 PM »

Hi there,

I'm running aMule 2.1.3 on my Debian 3.1 box. I'm connected to the Internet through an ADSL modem and a router. My router is given a static IP address by my ISP.

It's now been several weeks that I can't connect to any ed2k servers. Of course, my first idea was to check my TCP & UDP ed2k ports to see whether they are firewalled or not. After checking, they are not. Just to be sure, I also try to connect my box to the Internet using only my ADSL modem, without the router, but the results were the same.

Then I run ethereal to look at the network traffic. Here is the result (my local IP is 192.168.1.2 and I was trying to connect to 62.241.53.2:8080) :
Code: [Select]
No.     Time        Source                Destination           Protocol Info
      1 0.000000    192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           TCP      32780 > webcache [SYN] Seq=0 Ack=0 Win=5840 Len=0 MSS=1460 TSV=4294893095 TSER=0 WS=0
      2 0.075042    62.241.53.2           192.168.1.2           TCP      webcache > 32780 [SYN, ACK] Seq=0 Ack=1 Win=5840 Len=0 MSS=1412
      3 0.075109    192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           TCP      32780 > webcache [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=5840 Len=0
      4 0.081854    192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           eDonkey  eDonkey TCP: Hello
      5 0.169593    62.241.53.2           192.168.1.2           TCP      30801 > 18662 [SYN] Seq=0 Ack=0 Win=5840 Len=0 MSS=1412
      6 0.169644    192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           TCP      18662 > 30801 [SYN, ACK] Seq=0 Ack=1 Win=5840 Len=0 MSS=1460
      7 0.247512    62.241.53.2           192.168.1.2           TCP      30801 > 18662 [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=5840 Len=0
8 3.081276    192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           eDonkey  [TCP Retransmission] eDonkey TCP: Hello
9 9.080362    192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           eDonkey  [TCP Retransmission] eDonkey TCP: Hello
10 21.078538   192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           eDonkey  [TCP Retransmission] eDonkey TCP: Hello
     11 25.478962   192.168.1.2           62.241.53.2           TCP      32780 > webcache [FIN, ACK] Seq=71 Ack=1 Win=5840 Len=0

Packet #4 doesn't get any answer (not even a TCP ACK). That's the problem, but I still don't know the reason...

Then I tried to connect the same machine to the Internet through a good old 56k modem. Note that I didn't get my usual static IP address, but a dynamic one. I run ethereal and amule again and this time I was able to connect to the server without any problem. Here is the log :

So... it's a mystery to me. It looks like my ADSL connection doesn't let me connect to an ed2k server anymore. Could it be that my static IP address is blacklisted somewhere ? What other reason could it be ?

Any idea/suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Regards,
Patrick

Welcome Patrick!

Blame your provider (free.fr) for using package filtering. This can be circumvented by using protocol obfuscation, but: aMule does currently not support this. (It will be implemented somewhen in the near future.) On Linux you can use eMule 0.47c with wine, even though it's an unlovely solution.

Great ! It works.

Does anybody know the packet filtering policy of this provider ? Does it filter out all the customers with static IP addresses ? all the ADSL customers ? At least I was able to connect with a 56k modem using the same provider...

Thanks a lot !

Afaik there are all ADSL customers affected. There are other free.fr-users who asked at the forums.
