how to optimize speed through configuration
« on: October 29, 2006, 01:25:57 PM »

I use aMule 2.1.3 under windows xp, and have a general problem achieving acceptable download speeds.

My connection is an ADSL 1500/300 kbps that is working perfect all the time.

I achieve high-ID, no problems there.

I can wary my upload speed between 10-30 kB/s without any problems, it adjusts perfectly. Yet my download speed remains between 0-5 kB/s - often around 3 kB/s, resulting in an up/down ratio of around 9:1. For hours on end no downloads start. I have around 20 active downloads waiting. Most of them with plenty of sources. When finally something happens I get 1-3 downloads running at 0.1 - 1.0 kB/s each...

I use the following settings:

Bandwith limits: Down: 150, Up: 25, Slot Allocation: 4
Max sources per file: 600 (used to have it a 50, no difference)
Max connections: 8

Core tweaks, Max new connections / 5 secs: 5

Suggestions????

There are several answers to this:
- If you just started using aMule it will take some time to build up credits with your sources. Be patient and the download speed will increase.
- Perhaps your ISP is "shaping" traffic, in which case it will never increase.

You can only tell which one of the two it is by waiting a few days. In general it is most effective to keep aMule running long periods of time to gain the credits. You can check the Wiki for more options, I can't offhand remember the entry, but there is something if you look under "why is amule slow".

Yes, I have read and read. I have been using aMule for several months, but the problem has only gotten worse.

Today I noticed that Kad is firewalled - this was not the case when I first started using aMule but I dont know when this first happened. I have tried to turn my own firewall completely off for more than 3 hours - no change - so it might be my ISP. Can I change the ports and what numbers should I change to? Can I simply pick any number I fancy?

Hi Kine!

As long as the ports are not used by another application, yes. You could use e.g. 64462TCP [->64465UDP] and 64472UDP.

Ok - I have tried this - but so far no results. I might have to wait a few hours before it notices it?

When I have a look at the kad network the nodes seems to be quite active. The graph is jumping up and down between 250 and 400 - and without the previous squared shape.

No, have had it running for many hours now, Kad is still firewalled.. I do receive HighID on the ED2K network.

What can I do to avoid kad from being firewalled? The ports have been changed - my own firewall has been opened for these new ports.

I now have an UL/DL ratio of 34.1:1

Max connections: 8

I'm not an expert at all... but isn't "Max Connection: 8" is tooooo low?

I have an ADSL connection of 128/128 kilo-bits per second (pure download speed of about 16.5KiB/s and upload speed of about 13KiB/s) and I have the Max Connection setting of 512!!!!

Try increasing the Max Connection to something around 50 and see what happens.

When do people start realising that the default settings are perfectly fine?
Hard Limit: 300
Max Connections: 500
Max new connections / 5 secs: 20

I'm getting download rates above 200. Just let your amule run 24/7/365 and you won't complain about slow download rates. And don't minimize your upload or you won't get good downloads. I'm having 90kbps and my amule runs with 75kbps. I'm having a UL:DL ratio of 1.5:1 with 750GB of uploaded data. I'm only running with ed2k enabled, when I'm downloading files >4GB, because those aren't supported in KAD.

Just let your amule run as long as you can and stop minimizing your UL and everything will be perfectly fine. Oh and don't download only 2 files. You should definitely add up to 10-30.
