Port Forwarding?
« on: December 19, 2006, 04:51:53 AM »

I've been trying for several days now to get back connected with my iMac.  None of the different servers will connect, so it must be the port settings with my linksys router.  I went through the steps outlined in some site I got referred to to properly program the router to set up a static ip address. Got to the point where it suggests several static addresses and entered the info on the router page and still got the same results: NoDa!  Maybe I got confused and screwed it up.

I seems to be to be doubly rediculas as it worked fine until about a week ago.  Though then it seemed to slow down other things on the internet.  Can someone help?

AFAIK you don't need port forwarding to connect to a server (port forwarding is necessary for incoming connections, connecting to a server is an outgoing connection).
The most likely cause of this would be a firewall. Although that would seem strange as you said it worked fine a week ago.

Thank you.  That makes a lot of sense about the forwarding.  My Apple firewall is off.  I thought firewalls were to stop things from getting in, not getting out.  I've checked my Linksys router firewall and made some changes, but still no connect.

It dn't make sense as it used to work.

Maybe the following info is helpful:

Quote
You need to forward the ports that aMule uses in your router. Take a look at http://portforward.com/routers.htm, that page has detailed step-by-step instructions for pretty much every router on the market.

aMule uses three ports (see Preferences->Connection) that need to be forwarded:
  • a client TCP port
  • a client UDP port (this is the above port +3)
  • and an eMule extended UDP port
Also, if you are running any firewall software (e.g., OS X's built-in firewall, which you can control via System Preferences->Sharing->Firewall) on your computer, you need to open the above ports there as well.

You can use the connection tester to check whether the client TCP port can be reached from the outside, that is, whether it is forwarded properly in your router and not blocked by any firewall software.

Good luck. :)

It seems like it might be related to our old friend, the hostname bug.  See this thread for a possible solution.

Hi - this thread is very interesting - I have the same problem I think - once you go to System Preferences->Sharing->Firewall - what do you do from that point?
I have Linksys model WRT54GC and Mac OS X 10.4.10

Hi all - brand new to Amule and desperately in seek of (real) beginners help....
I have downloaded amule and it seems it connects to a server e-donkey server no 1, but the download rate is ... 0!!

I have tried the port tester and it tells me
The port is available for connections but a connection was refused meaning there is nothing listening on that port. This most likely means you can use ED2K but your client is not currently running. Try running this test again with an ED2K client running to make sure you can really establish a connection. No info available; this TCP error probably indicates a problem with the networking on your system (i.e. the TCP/IP stack).

Not sure what I need to do to have an ED2K client running?
Thanks for your help dudes!

aMule is an ED2K client, so if aMule is running you have an ED2K client running. If you test your port aMule should be running and you have to select the same port as aMule is listening on (see aMule's preferences).

Thanks Supersnail!
Amule is running and I selected port 4662 and ran the port tester again.
It stills gives me the same answer - connection refused meaning there is nothing listening on that port.

Now the download rate is 3 kb/s, which is already a progress versus 0, but is incredibly low. Arrows are yellow... should I try another port number?
Thanks!!

Trying a different port is a good idea. Also, make sure your firewall doesn't block the port.

Hello Supersnail...
My firewall is off - I have checked in Preferences>sharing>Firewall...

Any idea of which other port number I could use? At the moment my TCP port is on 4662 and my UDP on 4672...

???  I have no idea on what are the options... is there somewhere on my MAC I could see the list of ports and what they are used for?
Thanks!!!!

There are lists on the internet with the ports and their use, but in general you can pick any port above 1024.

 :P ... Hi Supersnail...!!!

So...followed your advice and I have tried many other ports, still no connection...

When I look at the log file, it tells me

2008-08-06 22:23:30: External connections disabled in config file

Do you think it can come from there?

Else, the log is giving me this type of information, showing I have not logged onto any server on my list
2008-08-06 22:26:16: Connection attempt to DonkeyFrance no1 (193.42.213.70:6000) timed out.
2008-08-06 22:26:17: Servers: Trying to connect
2008-08-06 22:26:17: Connecting to Sharing Kingdom 1 (89.248.172.54 - 89.248.172.54:4500)
2008-08-06 22:26:17: Connected to Sharing Kingdom 1 (89.248.172.54:4500)
2008-08-06 22:26:17: Lost connection to Sharing Kingdom 1 (89.248.172.54:4500)
2008-08-06 22:26:17: Connection lost

I am really a newbie... Any useful information in there to solve the connection issue as far as you can see??
