How do I find out my bandwidth?

I have just got a Macbook. And I have just installed amule. I am new to all this. It seems the first step is to set preferences, such as my bandwidth. I have broadband. I have no idea at all what the bandwidth is, for either up or downloading. How do I find out?

There are some web sites for testing the speed of your connection.  You can google for them.  However, you should probably start by asking your ISP.  You bandwidth is determined by the type of service you have purchased from your provider.

Lastly, remember that bandwidth is often described in terms of kilobits per second (kbps).  In aMule's preferences, you should enter values in kilobytes per second (kBps).  To translate from kbps to kBps, you divide by 8.

Thanks I just tried that now. It says I have download 375kB/s and upload 64kB/s. Does that sound likely, with broadband? And then, what on earth is "slot allocation"? I find no explanation in the online instructions. I must give it a value from 0 to 30.

"slot allocation" is the amount of bandwidth given to each up- or download slot. If you have 6 kbs up, then you probably want set an upload speed of 5kbs with two upload slots, which would allocate 2.5 kbs apiece.

Yes, that sounds likely.

If those numbers are correct, I would use an upload limit of 55kB/s in aMule and a value of about 10kB/s for slot allocation. As a rule of thumb, aMule utilizes your upload bandwidth best if it is using at least 5 upload slots (55 / 10 ~= 5).
